Did you ask your oncologist about RX Clay?  This stuff absorbs water pretty quickly and is safe to try.

Ahh I totally forgot to ask about that! I saw your comment last week about it. Thank you, Pam for reminding me. I am writing it down so I won't forget. It would be nice to try since we know for sure that the first 2-3 days after initial chemo the diarrhea was chemo-induced. Is the RX Clay ok to give prophylactically - say day of chemo - or do you have to wait until they start having diarrhea?

Oh my gosh what a ruff ride indeed! Worms? EEEW! So sorry. I've never dealt with them either, I think I would really get grossed out and want to burn everything too. I hope you've resolved the problem.

Isn't it amazing how dogs can have an episode like that and still be normal and acting like their usual selves? No human would!

Meanwhile, yes you can usethe RX clay preventively. There is a mega dose schedule for runny poop episodes, and a GI gut maintenance schedule. The stuff is miraculous. We are never without it, Nellie gets some almost every day because she tends to have inconsistent poop. Let us know if it works for Arya.

Oh mannnn.  worms.  I'm sorry, it's both so gross and so distressing! I wonder if the chemo weakened her resilience and she picked them up as a result?

Boone and Arya are on a synced schedule, he goes in for his next dose on the 18th.  I will keep all my fingers crossed for you guys having a smoother journey with the second dose!

Boone's bloodwork came back (10 day mark) okay, I think (well, the oncologist didn't call about it so I assume ok). He was above reference values for the danger zone, but just barely in a few.  Poops remain mostly solid - as in, they hold shape, but they're quite a bit squishier than we're used to when we pick them up.

Because I know his immune system is weakened, I've been the worlds worst helicopter mom.  No sniffing of the fun stuff and we're going way off the beaten track for walks.

OK - update - dewormer didn't do a thing so the oncologist gave us flagyl earlier this week and postponed chemo #2 by 2 days to see if her diarrhea would improve with the antibx and YUP - 24 hrs after starting flagyl it cleared right up. PHEW - so glad we got to the bottom of it. I guess the first round of chemo threw her GI system completely out of whack? She also gave the OK on the RX Clay which has been amazing in preventing diarrhea post-chemo #2 (THANK YOU PAM!). smiley_clap

Her appetite hasn't suffered as of yet like it did after her first chemo either! She reduced the dose by 20% and had us give Cerenia the day before and morning of chemo #2. The rest of her chemo will be in San Diego but the oncologist here is going to recommend increasing the dose if no issues this round 🙂

I was thinking about you and Arya yesterday! Glad you guys figured it out, and I’m noting the Rex clay for Boone just in case ❤️

Boones appetite is significantly down this time - he vomited on night one, too. Unfortunately he puked his main supplement mixture and pharmaceutical cheese ball and is now refusing both, so we are trying to find new vehicles for ingestion.  His neutrophil count was down to 2400 this time prior to his dose, and I’m wondering if that’s why he’s taking it harder.

how many rounds are you guys doing?

Wow that is GREAT! I love that she's doing better and things are dialed in again.

Boone I hope you feel better buddy. Maybe forget the supplement mixture for a while and just focus on only the meds/pills he really needs. Have you tried stinky meats and cheeses to get him to eat? Not sure if I shared these with you already, but be sure to see our posts about perking up appetites for some ideas:

When my dog went through Chemo (and he's now doing Chemo again for Oral Melanoma), the Oncologist gave him 1/2 tab of Cerenia with the treatment and then had him on Ondanestron (Zofran) 8 mg every 12 hours for 5 days after each treatment and he had zero problems with nausea or diarrhea and it's less pricey than Cerenia.  This second series of Chemo is causing some nausea so his chemo dose is going to be reduced a bit for his next 3 treatments.

Hoping Boone is doing bettersp_hearticon2 THe oncologist here recommended 5 rounds with Arya being on the younger side and with her bloodwork not having any of the indicators that would usually indicate a poorer prognosis. But she did mention that some Oncologists just like to do 6 total as standard so with that she said it's possible our new oncologist in San Diego post-move may want 6 total. We will see!

Mcmahod - thank you for sharing that experience with your dog and Zofran. You are not kidding about Cerenia being pricey. It was $100 for a ox of 4 tabs (dosing is 1/4 tab per day as needed). I was like W.O.W. lol. I noticed it does make Arya pretty sleepy so I am going to ask the next oncologist after our move about trying Zofran as needed.

WOAH! Had no idea that Cerenia is now that costly. Yikes! Thanks for the reality check. Let us know if the Zofran works.
