Puddin has started to eat a little better she is off the prevecox. She has been doing this whining that makes u feel like she's in pain. We put her back on 1/2 pain tab every 8 hrs. When she goes out to the bathroom shes usually ready to come right back in. Sometimes she'll do this yelping when u pet her that makes u feel like she's hurting. We still haven't got the biopsy report back and I feel like time is wasting while we wait on that. She gets her staples out Friday maybe that will make her feel better. In the back of our mind we are afraid the cancer has spread somewhere else and she's in pain. Sometimes she'll wag her tail and seems like she's happy but she's sleeping 23 1/2 hrs out of the day. We don't know what to do. It may be taking her loinger to recover but I don't want her to be in pain. Normally we could tell every type of bark or yelp she has but since the surgery its harder to tell. Any thoughts would be appreciated, I know Radar is around the same time frame as puddin. (front left amp will be 12 in November)

Thanks,

Dawn

Dawn,

Are you putting Puddin back on Prevecox?  I am wondering if it really was this meds causing her discomfort.  The vet only prescribed Tramadol, and Metacam, so I have no knowledge of the side effects when the meds in works in reality.

Have you tried doing massage on her?  if so, how did she respond to that kind of touching as oppose to petting?  You said she yelped when you petted her, was there any particular spot(s) you petted that she would yelp consistently? or just random?

Have you noticed anything unusual when she hops.  Any favouring of one particular leg?

Genie slept a lot too, but not to the extent of 23.5 hours a day.

Any chance she has bandages on?  if so, would it be too tight?  or maybe the wound is healing up that she feels itchy there?

Sorry, I am just brainstorming here.

I hope she will feel better after having the staples removed on Friday and that the vet can check out on her.

Please keep us posted!

Sorry to hear Puddin is still struggling with pain.  Radar too is still crying out but we've determined his pain is in one of his rear legs.  He got his stitches out yesterday and that did seem to offer some relief but he had tension stitches rather than staples.  The staples may be more irritating.

Radar was also on Prevacox which I didn't know anything about until reading on this forum. He is completely off of it now which I'm glad for.  The concensus is that prevacox is very hard on the stomach and could be bothering puddin, especially if she isn't eating before you give the pain meds.

watch her carefully - see if you can determine where her pain is.  Is she worrying at the incision site? limping on or chewing at one of her rear legs?  Watch when she gets up and down and see if she is struggling more than she did initially.  Also is Puddin on antibiotics?  if not, check her temperature.  If they aren't on antibiotics there is a chance of infection setting in.

Hugs to you and Puddin - hope she is feeling better soon.

the only meds Puddin is on is the tramadol 1/2 tab every 8 hrs. the dr actually wanted her off of them last Wed but she seemed to be indiscomfort so we put her back on them at half dosage 8 days ago. I haven't tried massage and she does that yelping sometimes when you pet her head or sometimes her side. I wonder if she might just be sore. She doesn't have any bandages and the staples will come out tomorrow I'll get a chance to talk to our regular vet then. Her age may be why she's having a hard time.  Just took her out to the bathroom a few minutes ago after she went she didn't really smell or look around or anything just headed right back into house. 2 nights ago we got up to go outside and she actually wanted to lay in her bed outside. Normally when Puddin was healthy given the choice to be outside or inside she would rather be outside. Last night she did eat well but this morning did't want a treat or anything. I haven't notice anything different about her walking. Sorry I'm kinda jumping from subject to subject. I appreciate your comments and prayers.

Give her another chance to get off the pain meds after the staples come out.  Let us know how that goes.

Hi guys, just catching up right now.

Puddin's age may or may not be a factor. We've seen younger dogs have a more dificult time than older ones. Her behavior does sound like something that your vet needs to investigate. When you go in, be sure to have notes that document all of her behavior. It will make it easier for the vet to rule out certain things.

Natural Balance Dog Food Treat Rolls

As far as her appetite; have you tried adding more tempting foods into her diet? When I was recovering, Mom found me Evo in a can, and gave me their yummy canned meats like rabbit and duck, along with my regular food. Totally exotic things that made me want to eat again. She also got me a big ol' Natural Balance sausage treat, and I LOVE that stuff! (My favorite flavor is lamb.) Just a few little bits of that mixed in my food make me gobble up all my meds.

Maybe things like this will help her appetite come back.

I know it's hard, but try not to imagine the worst. We all have some hurdles to overcome after surgery, some are bigger than others. But just try to keep a pawsitive attitude, things will get better. Please keep us posted tomorrow, we've got our paws crossed.

Love,

Jerry

Puddin got her staples out yesterday and had a really good day. She was up and about the most she had been since her surgery. Yesterday evening it had even cooled off enough for her to lay outside for while. We live in AL so it's been to hot for her to be out much. Her appetite has returned and we started her on K9 immunity and transfer factor yesterday. Anyone else taking this?? Do u divide up the dosage or give them it all at once. They are closed today so haven't been able to call and ask, due to Puddin's weight she has quite a few to take. I'm glad this post has been on a little happier note than most of my previous. I appreciate everyones comments and look forward to hearing from everyone. I hope Radar is doing well.

Thanks,

Dawn

Glad to hear Puddin is doing better.  Sounds like getting the staples out really made a difference.  I haven't used the K9 immunity but I know Jerry or someone else here can help you there.

Radar is coming along slowly but surely.  I'll post his progress.

Hugs to Puddin and to you for being there for her.

Hi Dawn & Puddin, so glad to hear things are looking good! Yeay!

Yes, I am on K9 Immunity . You can read about it here.

I take Transfor Factor, and then 7 pills a day (I'm 75 pounds). The TF I take in the AM with peanut butter, and the pills get mixed into my food at night (see my Health Tips page). My vet/oncologist says that taking them this way is fine.

Hope this helps!
