Hi everyone-

Blackjack had his surgery yesterday.  He has been restless, so they have given him a little sedation to help him calm down.  He is also having problems with post-op bleeding.  They have given him plasma and can give him aminoproic acid, if needed, though it is not part of their usual protocol.  I have read some abstracts online where that has been used, but it is usually given right after surgery.  Anyone have any experience with it being used a day or two later?  We spent some time with him tonight, and he is definitely anxious.  We really want to stay optimistic, but it's hard.  We'd appreciate any prayers, good wishes, etc. that you want to say for him.  Thanks!

Nancy,

Isn't Blackjack a greyhound? The newest trend for greyhounds is to use the aminoproic acid routinely now. I made sure that was available for my greyhound when she had her amp.

If your vets have any questions, they can always contact Dr. Couto at Ohio State. He always answers emails rapidly & can guide them if needed.

If he were my greyhound, I would e-mail Dr Couto asap asking for advise. That's just my 2 cents, but you will find me to be the greatest advocate a greyhound has ever known.

Greyhounds are such a double edged sword, they are the greatest blood donors and yet have such a tendency to be bleeders.

I hope the plasma clears the bleeding issue up. I wonder if he was a bleeder when he had his medical? I always advised my clients if there were any issues so they could inform their vets.

Lots of healing white light heading to you & Blackjack.

I haven't had to use this myself but I have heard it can work wonders.  Are his platelets low?  Is he anemic enough for a whole blood transfusion?  Different breeds can get Von Willebrand's disease or other clotting disorders so some of these are hard to sort out.  Most dogs will respond to treatment but may require multiple transfusions.

Good luck!

Jane-

The critical care doc said that it hasn't
been used at Angell, but she is going to push for that.  He is doing
much better, though he now has a fever which is being stubborn.  They
removed his IV tonight, so maybe that will help.  His WBC is still
normal, and he is getting up and moving, peeing and eating, and doesn't
appear to be in too much pain.  Thanks to everyone for their advice and
best wishes - I really appreciate it, as does Blackjack.  Hopefully my
next post will be to say that he is home!

Nancy-

So happy to hear he is doing better!!! Wow!!

My husband's greyhound, Ticket, was treated at Angell when he bled out after his neuter/dental prior to his adoption, many years ago. They do a good job! Is Dr.Trout still there? He's honored in another forum I frequent as being a wonderful surgeon for greyhounds with LP.

If the CC doc gets them to use the aminoproic acid for greyhounds & it saves just one life, you have been the building block of that. Pat yourself on the back!

I can't wait for you to tell us he is home!!!

Go Blackjack, heal well.
