Hi Sandra - I'm sorry that Chance's chemo was delayed, but I'm glad to hear that he is overall doing well.  If you wanted to continue with chemo, another option to discuss with Chance's oncologist is Palladia, a low dose chemo in pill form given at home usually on an every other day or M/W/F schedule.  Griffin had 3 rounds of Carboplatin before we switched to Doxorubicin after chest x-rays revealed lung mets.  He never really exhibited any side effects with either pf those chemo agents.  We suspended the Doxorubicin a few weeks ago to allow the administration of the Yale clinical trial canine cancer vaccine, which cannot be given with traditional chemo but can be administered with Palladia.  About a week after starting Palladia (and Piroxicam at the same time), Griffin started acting picky about his food, an issue that continues today, but thankfully he has never stopped eating completely.  So, knowing that dogs react differently to the various types of chemo, Palladia might be worth consideration.  Good luck with whatever you decide!  ~ Stacy

Griffin lived an amazing life for 11 years! Diagnosed with osteosarcoma on March 17, 2020, Griffin's right forelimb was amputated on April 2, 2020. Ten days later he was running and playing fetch! Lung metastasis discovered in July 2020 did not slow down Griffin and he lived joyfully for the next 7 months, passing peacefully at home on February 11, 2021. https://griffin.tripawds.com

Ugh.....bummer.   We do see this happen sometimes  where the side effects just don't  warrant  any "possible" benefits  of chemo.

The only thing I can remind you is that chemo is pretty much a crap shoot anyway.  No right or wrong on any path you take from here on out.  It's  such a personal decision for you and for Chance.

We can point out pups that did really well with NO chemo;  pups who did really well WITH chemo; pups who lost their battle before even completing their rounds of chemo: pups who, lost their battle fairly quickly with no chemo.  Again, just stressing that their are no giarantees without chemo.

And Chance is blissfully  unaware of any of this and continues  to thrive being Chance!!  The joy of being dog!!  So yes, continue  to make every moment count just as you have been.  Give yourself time to digest everything  and see what resonates with you on a "gut" level.

And we cannot wait to see more photos!!!

Thanks for the comment about palladia...I'll have to ask the Dr about that.  She didn't mention that one.  I told her I'd already heard of the doxorubicin from the great support on the Tripawds website! icon_lol  I know every patient (2-legged or 3-legged) has different reactions and success with or without chemo so just have to decide what's best for my little pawdy! We also talked about waiting another week or so and taking chest Xrays to look for any mets.  Lots of options, just have to find the right fit for Chance.

Adding a photo from our walk last night.  My grand-nephew insists on riding when Chance rides.  Good thing he doesn't weigh much! I'll have to give a review...my only recommendation for the company would be to add a brake or something to be able to lock the wheel on a hill or any incline.  Otherwise...LOVE IT!

What a gorgeous photo!! That is a cool stroller! I can totally understand wanting some kind of brake, lol. Chance looks really happy. I can understand why you are on the fence with future treatments. Chance is still totally loving life, and that is really what this is all about.

I have a feeling his new ride is going to get a lot of use smiley16

Where did the time go?  I keep meaning to post an update but time gets away from me.  Chance had his 5th and final (hopefully) chemo session on 12 Nov.  We celebrated with a trip to Starbucks for a pupachino and then pup-treats after dinner.  It was a great day!

So far he's doing great.  Still not going on any long walks...well, not without hoping into his stroller here and there.  He gets lots of hugs from kids along the walking route, which he absolutely loves!  Next appointment is a follow up next week for x-rays to check for any mets.  I've noticed him coughing a bit in the last couple days so going to call the oncologist tomorrow to see if we can't move up his appointment.  Hopefully I'm just being overly cautious but if something is going on, better to catch it early.

I do love this guy!  He's such a great boy and loves to cuddle with his mom and sis!  Looking forward to more memories with both my kids!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  Stay safe!

Oh wow there he is! Thank you so much for the pupdate Sandra, you made our day. It's so good to see him and know that he's enjoying life. Aren't strollers awesome?! That's so cool he is going out in the world with all of you. He's making a life-long impression on the kiddos, that's for sure!

We are all thinking pawsitive and will keep our paws crossed that he gets an all-clear from the vet at his next appointment! Keep on with all the good times and give him extra smooches from all of us. He's a real smiley10

Great news!  All xrays are clear...no signs of mets!  Yay!! Of course we celebrated...don't really need a special reason to celebrate these days!  I was so excited to get the news.  However, Chance has developed a bit of a cough.  It started before the x-rays and I mentioned it to his doc, but she couldn't find anything on his x-rays so we're going to keep an eye on that.  Other than that, we're enjoying the cooler weather...it's about time!  Next appointment...Feb for another x-ray.

I did get an early Christmas present, primary for Chance and Kenya although I'm sure I'll find enjoyment in it.  I bought a food dehydrator so that I can start making some healthier treats (e.g., sweet potatoes, carrots, etc) as an alternative to some of their normal treats which have too many grains/carbs.  Can't wait to try it out! Also started adding goats milk to their diets.  With Chance's picky eating, I read that the goats milk can help with any digestive issues he may be having.  Figure Kenya can benefit from it too although she has no issues with eating just about anything put in front of her!

With all the not so great stuff that happened in 2020, a clean bill of health for Chance is all I really wanted for Christmas! smiley_clapicon_lol

Hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas holidays!

WOOHOO! This is a great Christmas present for us too! Great news you guys!

giphy.gif

Hopefully the little cough is just a hiccup of some sort, like allergies or something. We won't worry about that now though, it's time to PAWTY!

Dehydrators are so awesome. Here's a great recipe that Cadence's mom sent to us way back. When you come up with your own creations let us know and we will feature them in the Tripawds Nutrition blog too!
