Awww, you won't go insane, you have us to lean on. Do what you can do and everything else can wait. Keep taking things day by day, you're getting there!

Oh, poor thing!  I would agree that the meds could be making him bonkers.  He might need a different combination.  I wonder how he would do with swaddling, like a baby?  For some reason that's what popped into my head.  My cats love to cuddle....maybe it would help him feel more secure, like the thundershirts do for dogs.

Hi Veronica

Have just read your post and wondered if I might be able to help.

My cat, Mr Darcey had rear leg amputation 3 months ago and was displaying some very strange behaviour which I refer to as 'episodes'.  This was where his stump would sort of rear up and he would not be able to stand or gain control of the other leg.  He was very distressed, as was I, and when I first saw it happen my thoughts were 'what on earth has the vet done'.  He would get very panic stricken and would try to move forward but was unable and at times he would cry out which I believed was due to pain but now believe it was more panic and frustration at not being able to do something he had always done. He would often flop down and at times I felt he would never be able to get up again ..but he did.  He hated the collar so we customised it a bit to make it more comfortable.  We made it slightly smaller in circumference and covered the edge in soft wadding and then put a sort of large plaster around it to make the edges squishy and more comfortable for him.

I used a 'Feliway' plug in device which is supposed to help keep cats calm and I believe it worked.  I also bought the Feliway spray and would often spray it into his bed and cage when he was out of it and he would then be quite content to sit in there and fall asleep.  I would often leave the cage door open so that he got use to being it and didn't feel trapped but of course he had to be in there when I was not around to watch him, especially when I gave him some reprieve from his e-collar!

I can't really comment on the medication your cat is taking as i am not familiar with it but Mr Darcey was on Metacam for quite a while until I gradually weaned him off it bu he was on it for a few months.

I really hope things settle down for you and if it is any consolation at all, I thought Mr Darcey would never get better and it broke my heart to see him struggling but here we are 3 months down the line and hardly any 'episodes' at all now and he is going outside and enjoying his life again.  He is yelling at me like he use to do and in actual fact is now even more affectionate than ever.

I guess every cat goes through this in a different way but I think as long as we have patience and love and try not to show them that we are anxious they will get better even if it may take a little while.

Wishing you all the luck in the world

Tracie and Mr Darcey
