Can anyone tell me how long most dogs stay on Gabapentin after amputation?

Good question! It has a better chance of getting answered as a new topic for Dr. Pam in the Ask A Vet forum.

Bo was on Gabapentin for 1 week before surgery and a little over 2 weeks after surgery. He had pretty severe phantom pains though, so it was quite necessary to keep him on it. We are so glad to hear Val is feeling better...and you are feeling better too!

Thanks Meghan. Valentina is doing so much better! She has been on the Gabapentin for a month since she had complications but she seems to have no pain now even during the irrigations. Her vet visit went well today. It was a really quick visit because the vet said that things are getting better. There is still a channel inside where the incision is that hasn't healed together yet. It is slowly getting smaller but may take a while longer to completely close. The vet said that we will be able to stop the irrigation when either the channel closes up or the fluid coming out is completely clear. She is acting like her old self in every way now so we both are very happy!! Sorry to hear about Bo not feeling well. Praying that the medicine you picked up gets him back on track. And congratulations on your job!!  superstar

Thank you so much for the kind words.

It was my understanding from the vet that the Gabapentin is for nerve pain. If Val is not having phantom pains, I would think that it would be ok to wean her off. I am no vet though. You are smart to wean her off slowly. The vet did tell us that dogs do experience "withdrawal" symptoms from it. Bo actually acted depressed and definitely panted when going off of it. He continued to have some milder phantom pains after we stopped the Gabapentin, but they went away and he hasn't taken any since.

I am so happy that things are looking better for you all! Continue to keep us posted!!

Valentina is still doing great. The drainage today was the least it has ever been. Her next appt. is on Monday for the irrigation. It is still just a waiting game for the channel to close up and the remaining drainage to stop. But I am so thankful that it has gotten so much better. Man that was hard to go through!!!!! I know that she is really feeling good now because now when our Doberman barks at someone she sees out the window Valentina chimes in too and even gets up now to go have a look. She hadn't done that in a while. She did do alot of panting in the night last night but I am still thinking that it is from coming off of the Gabapentin. I got up and turned down the AC and she seemed to feel better. I am finally getting to go to church tomorrow! My husband is going to stay with her while I go. I have really missed it and needed it.

We've all been waiting for this update.  I was very scared for you guys at the point she had to go back to the hospital. So happy for both of you that she finally has made the turnaround.

Oh Happy Day!! The drainage has STOPPED!!!! There was none through the night and none today!! I can't believe it! No panting in the night last night either.I went to church and it was so great to be there after not going for a month. Then I came home and made roasted eggplant and peppers with greek couscous and chicken. Yum. Things are starting to feel back to normal. I may even get to sleep in my own bed again soon. I have still been sleeping downstairs with Valentina. I have done that for so long now it will be strange to sleep upstairs so far away from her. I will be happy to sleep in my bed though. I think I will wait a few more days just to make sure everything is really ok. I'm not sure if the vet will still do the irrigation if the drainage has stopped. Her appt is supposed to be tomorrow but I may change it till Tuesday so I will find out soon. It will be so nice to get her off some of these meds too. Thank You everyone for your help and encouragement throughout this traumatizing time. It has been a blessing to have everyone rooting for us and the care and concern. So thankful that I found this site!!  laughing
