Hello, Does anyone have experience with Cushings after amputation?

Morrie (French bulldog) was doing really well for about a month post op,  (mast cell cancer) then, BAM! He started throwing up bile, then stopped eating. He hasn't eaten a real meal for about two weeks, for the past week he's only had a few tablespoons of baby food a day, which we squirt into his mouth with a syringe. He still drinks lots of water. He's being treated with injected anti-nausea medicine, injected Pepcid ac, and an antacid/stomach coater that we give him like we do the baby food. In the past few days Morrie has been very lethargic, which could be from the medication or the lack of nutrition. We have been putting pedialite in his water.

The vet is testing for Cushings based on the facts that the hair has not grown back from his operation, he has small (tested-benign) lumps on his back and leg, he has been drinking way more water than normal, and the stomach thing. We should hear today or at least in the next few days.

Morrie was a super-healthy dog before his amputation. His only chronic problem was ear infections and allergies. We did not give him prednisone, which we give to his little sister who has more severe allergies. He was taking Apoquel.

Has anyone had anything like this happen post amp?

Hi,

I remember that Rio had Cushings (and mast cell cancer) but I think she had it before her amp. However Rio had been fighting mast cell for several years before she lost her leg. Rio crossed The Bridge in 2012 and her mom Micki is not active here.  You could try sending her a PM and see if she responds- she posted as riosmom

Here is Rio's blog: http://riosmom......ipawds.com

My pug Maggie had a crash similar to yours several years after her amp and chemo, but we were dealing with renal failure.

Oh gosh! So sorry Morrie, and you, are having to deal with this! To be doing so well after amputation and now how this flare up just stinks!

Seeing how adorable he is in his avatar picture just melts my heart! He is sooooooo cute!!

So NOTHING is showing up indicating any cause? Bloodwork not indicating any cause? Xrays? No signs of blockage or some obstruction? No indication of organs showing poor function? I'm sure poison of some sort has been eliminated by now. This is just crazy.

I'm sure youreq bedside yourself with worry. Has the vet tried SubQ fluids to maybe help him feel better? Perhaps an appetite stimulant too?

I'm sure everything I've mentioned has been done, but just throwing stuff out there.

Second opinion? Third opinion? Does the vet have any suggestions on how to get some nutrition in Morrie? Obviously, what he's doing so far isn't working.

Not sure what the treatment is for Cushing, but could the vet go on and start him in a treatment plan for that until the test results come in? This would give Morrie a headstart if that's what it is.

PLEASE keep us posted! Sorry I have no insight to offer. Hang in there. A solution has to be available! Has to be!! Paws crossed!

Love and hugs!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

PS. Since he does drink water, is it possible to puree chicken into a fine "mush" and put it in his water? Even try doing the same thing with his favorite kibble.

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Karen and Sally et al.

Thank you for your responses. It amazes that some of you will take so much time helping others by sharing your knowledge and experience. I certainly appreciate it.

It turns out Morrie's tests came back negative for Cushings. So now we are just trying to keep him hydrated with Pedialite, feeding him watered-down baby food through a syringe into his mouth like a baby bottle, and giving him sucralfate, also orally through a syringe. The very odd thing is that he doesn't fight the syringe and almost laps up the food from the syringe, but he absolutely won't have anything to do with anything in a dish, except water. He has drunk the water when we put some pedialite in it, but he will go around the house looking for a bowl of plain water before he drinks the pedialite water. He won't even drink plain chicken broth. today he threw up his first dose of sucralfate, but he kept down his second dose, and he's kept down 2 syringes of food so far (about 4 tsp total). We try for 4 syringes a day.

Thanks again for your concern.

Has your vet checked kidney and liver function?

I had to feed Maggie with a syringe for most of 3 months.  It was odd- she seemed to like it once I could get her started, but if I squirted the food on a plate she wouldn't eat it.

I ended up running canned food through a blender to puree it and fed that to her. It had better nutrition than the baby food I tried.

I hope you find what is causing Morrie's issues.

Here is a picture of my Dad feeding Maggie her gruel.

Frenchies can have sensitive GI tracts and due to their deep-chested anatomy it is not unusual for them to develop esophageal reflux especially after surgery.  Unfortunately this can only be diagnosed with endoscopy.

If your vet has ruled out pancreatitis and other metabolic disease with a blood test and xrays are normal then I would treat with a course of pepcid, sucralfate, and possibly Reglan or Cerenia for nausea.  Often 10 days does the trick.
