Our Blue had a front leg amputation for osteo on Jan. 31 and is coming along fine.  She gets to shed the cone in a couple of days and the vet recommended a bath.

Any tips on newly tripawd baths?  She is a greyhound, and I am afraid the length of time standing for a bath might be a bit much/exhausting.  We would do it in our standard sized tub.  Should we wait for the bath until she is stronger and has more endurance?  Other modifications we could use?  How important is it right now (does it help get rid of the crusty scabs?)  Thanks!

Others may have more insight as my Happy Hannah  never had a lot of scabbing to the point a Vet suggested  bathing.  FWIW I wouldn't  go with a full scale bath just yet for the reasons you outlined.

If your pupper is having a whole lot of itching scabs maybe you could "spot bathe"  the area to soften the scabs....maybe??

Anyway, glad to hear your Greyt  Blue is doing so well.  They are such sweet dogs.

Hang on for input from others that may be more helpful.

My little Pug Maggie lost a back leg.

When I would give her a bath in the tub I made sure the entire bottom of the tub was covered with a non-slip mat.  Since she was a rear amp I would scrub her back end then let her sit down while I did the middle and front end.  When rinsing I let her sit and started on the front end and rinsed as much as possible before I asked her to stand.

I also positioned her so that when rinsing her back was toward the drain so the water and soap drained away from her.

I didn't have to worry about her jumping out: she was little, a rear amp, and the bathtub was one of those big old claw foot type.
