Hello all!

Well, My Reno was doing so well (4 months post amp), we were following our chemo schedule- Carbo every 3 weeks and on the 3rd visit got a bit of poor news, he had what looked like a lung met- but just one. Had treatment and we stayed on schedule. Had his 4th and all blood work looked good. The 5th treatment meant chest x-ray and ultra sound again. Well, the met had almost doubled in size and had a partner now. So we opted to change the course of treatment, and due to the cost we opted for Doxorubicin. He had his cardio work up and all looked good. He had his first treatment just under a month ago and has gone downhill since. He's lost 6 pounds because he is not eating well at all. I have been cooking him boiled ground beef and egg noodles ( about all he'll eat). We've given him Cerenia and have been giving mirtazapine daily.

This Wednesday was to be is 2nd doxo...but after speaking with the onco we've decided to try the Palladia, the only problem is that he is still not eating well and now seems to be very fatigued and seems pretty weak on his feet.  The Onco prescribed another anti-nauseal (name escapes me right now) and pepcid, in conjunction with a half Cereneia and continued Mirtazapine.

I am starting to get really concerned that the doxo has had some ill effect on him. Does anyone have any experience with this drug? The limb weakness also scares the crap out of me.  We can't start the Palladia until he starts to eat more regularly.

Any and all info welcome! Please and thank you...

I'm sorry to hear that type of chemo isn't agreeing with Reno, I know you must be so worried. We actually have an entire blog post and oncologist interview about doxo, here it is:

Cisplatin and Doxorubicin Side Effects in Dogs

It sounds like your onco is really on top of things though as far as treating his nausea. Hopefully the new meds will kick in soon. Is the newest one odanesteron? (I think that's how it's spelled). If so, that's an excellent one to be on, it should work very soon. Meanwhile check out our appetite tips in our Tripawds Nutrition blog :

First of all...YAAAAAAAAAY FOR RENOE! Fourteen mo th AMPUVERSARY and more on the way!!

I cannot offer any insight I to the durgs, but our Jerry gave you great links.

I do knlw that some here have had a very tough time with one of them and some opted to stop. I bring that up merely to say when the treatment lessens quality, not treating is sometimes the best treatment. It certainly doesn't mean yiu are giving up! There are many holistic approaches to consider and maybe even metronomics .

I'm no vet, but it most definitely makes sensw not to co tinue for now until Reno is feeling stro ger and has no more side effects from the previous treatment.

My beloved Happy Hannah had four rou ds of Carbop@atin and when a ".et the size of a baseball" (the vet's words) months later, I decided no more poki g, proddi g, vet trips et,. I did try metronomics for a brief time but she got a uti so I stopped.

A d we had so e wo derful extended time with no vet visits...just "being dog" I still gave her good nutrition and supple.ents...but she also jad ice cream and steaks and yes, an occasional M&M!

The mets can sometimes make a dog tire v ery easily and maybe even become a bit weak in the legs. Happy Hannah thoroughly enjoyed being a couch potato or sunbathing without eny exertion.

Stay in the momet with Reno and let NOTHING rob you of your time together!! That's sooo impprtant! Reno doesn't care wha the xrays show and days on a calendar mean nothi g! Being in the mome et with you and getting your lovi g a d spoiling...that means everything!!!

Se ding lots of love!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Thanks Jerry.

Does the Ondansetron tend to have a sedative effect? I think that the Onco mentioned that while we were there. That is what it seems like to me...all he wants to do is sleep and seems pretty weak and wobbly on his feet, and wants to eat even less now.

I am going to withhold it tomorrow a.m. and see if he's a bit more perky when I get home. he is prescribed one tab twice daily.

Hi Tammy and Reno,

My Angel Polly fought hemangiosarcoma a few years back, and her main chemo drug was doxorubicin...... She had an extremely difficult time with her first couple of treatments till we could get her excessive vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration under control. We ended up having to use a combination of several drugs to help her; first was for nausea, a combination of Cerenia and metoclopramide, pepcid, metronidazole for her diarrhea, and we had to have E.R. intervention twice with i.v. fluids to combat her dehydration. We had a heck of a time getting it controlled but we did finally, and she sailed through the rest of her treatments. We had to start her on all the preventatives the day of her chemo, and continue for about 4 days and then when we did her treatments with cyclophosphamide, we had to start the metaclopramide by itself, and pepcid just to be on the safe side. The Doxorubicin was the main culprit with Polly's extreme reaction. Her oncologist said he had never had a dog have the kind of reaction that Polly did.

Hopefully you can get Reno back on track with help from his vet......I don't know if any of my experience helps you, but I wanted you to know that we did have great difficulties as well, so that may ease your mind a bit that you aren't alone with this struggle.

Keeping you and Reno in my thoughts,
Bonnie, Angel Polly, Pearl, and Zuzu

Tammy I'm not too sure about all side effects of odansetron but tiredness is definitely one of them according to drugs.com. I hope that things are better today, let us know OK?
