Pigment changes from Chemo?

Jack just had has third round of chemo today (carboplatin).  Beginning with his first treatment his skin started to change from pink to a dark, spotted gray.  Clearly, it's the most obvious on his shaved hip where he had the amputation but I think it's all his skin under his fur as well.  I recall "pigment changes" being listed as a possible side effect in the information packet they sent home with our first chemo treatment, but I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this, and if it went back to normal after the chemo or stayed that way.

Not a big deal, obviously, I was just curious and there's not a lot of info on the internet about it.  You'll find references to people having some pigmentation changes, especially in their nail beds, but there's no mention of dog skin changes.

Not going to complain, as it's pretty much the only side effect he's had, other than some tiredness when his white cell count drops just the slightest at the 2-3 week mark after each treatment.

Thanks!

Hi Cortney, welcome to you and Jack. Thanks for registering, your future posts won't need approval.

Wow what a coincidence, we were just talking about spots on Misty.

I searched the forums and the closest thing I could find was Bear's experience. I'm hoping others will chime in. I will tweet this for you too.

Can't blame you for being curious, once we start dealing with cancer we tend to look at our dogs' health verrrry carefully!

Shelby's pigmentation has changed too. She's extremely anemic and she was on carboplatin (but I think I noticed her pigment changes with the other chemo). Basically her bare booty used to be more purple and now it's more grey. And she's got some spots in her mouth. Nothing to be concerned about, per her onco, but I wanted to chime in that it does happen. Jack might be slightly anemic so that could cause that or it could be the chemo. Not sure.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Hi Cortney, just wanted to say that when my sweet Polly went thru chemo, her lovely pinkish complexion did change to very unattractive, sallow, spotty skin......however, once her chemo was finished, she eventually did get her pretty pink skin back.

P.S. Also want to mention that some fur loss is possible, including whiskers, eye lashes and such, but all fur does return as well.

Thanks folks!  Jack's blood work is PERFECT, so I don't think it's connected to Anemia - just to the chemo meds it seems.  He hasn't had any hair loss but the fur is certainly growing back much more slowly from his amputation since he started the chemo.  It was like in full blown growing mode right away and then POW it stopped when we started the chemo.  At least he's got enough that I don't have to apply sunscreen anymore.  :)

I don't know how to insert pictures!  When I click the pic link (with the tree) it asks for a URL, doesn't let me browse for a file to upload.

Welcome to you and Jack.

Photos have to be hosted on line in order to insert into your posts here. You can use a Tripawds blog, it's free, or use a site like photobucket. Here is a link to the instructions: http://tripawds.....-photos-1/

Maggie's fur didn't really come all the way back until she finished her chemo. I also noticed that the fur on her chest thinned a bit.

Looking forward to pictures.

This happened to Chance while he was on the carboplatin. Greyish spots along incision (or either that's just where it was most noticeable). His labs were perfect the whole time. From what I can tell the spots are gone, or either the hair is just covering it now. He did 6 rounds and has been done for 2 months.

Chance is a 10ish Shetland Sheepdog Mix who was rescued from the shelter in January of 2013 and diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in September of 2013. He had a front left amputation and 6 rounds of carboplatin. He had a great 11 months and was diagnosed with lung mets on 8/23/14. He was released to the bridge on 8/28/14.
