We're on day 3 of metronomic chemo. Today confirms that Winnie is out of sorts for a few hours after taking it. Super sleep and then up and panting. Hmmm...it's not terrrible but it's worrisome. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I understand that there really aren't side affects so I'm worried I'm imagining it. But there she is...panting away....

What chemo pill is she on? Jill did not pant on metronomic chemo (leukeran) but it did make her all out of sorts, very lethargic and she lost a ton of weight. We wound up stopping.

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Cassie went through 4 rounds of IV chemo (Carbo) then ongoing metronomic treatment (chlorambucil) for just about a year.  She did have similar episodes as you are describing - heavy panting and being restless at night - when she had first one or two of Carbo treatments, but not since then, even while being on the metronomics .

She just started Palladia protocol almost 3 weeks ago, and we have noticed she was having the panting and restless episodes at night.  At this point, we are not sure if it's Palladia's side effects or lung mets are starting to affect her respiratory system.

Side effects like that seem to vary very widely from one drug to another, and one dog to another.  With your loving care, I'm sure your pup will get through this tough period and come out stronger!

Yes, my first question is what pills is she currently taking? It may be the chemo pill or it may be other drugs interacting with it. More info would help.

She's on cyclophosphomide. She's been on the novox (along with pepcid) for weeks already so I don't think it's that. Hard to tell though. Do we think she could just be adjusting? I can't seem to find anything only about the chemo producing side effects (beyond the potential for blood in the urine). But the panting and sort of freaked out thing is new and came with the chemo. Also, i'm supposed to get her to pee as often as she wants for the 6 hours after she takes the pill - and you would probably laugh at the lengths i'm going to - but she just doesn't want to go out. There's a foot of snow on the ground and she still needs help up the 2 steps back into the house. They say the concern about the blood in the urine is a cumulative effect so I'm trying to worry too much.
