Bandit had his stitches removed yesterday and is really doing well. I asked the Vet if he should stay on all of his meds: remadyl, gabapentin and tramadol. I was basically told it was trial and error on my part to see what Bandit is comfortable with. I started cutting the tramadol and gabapentin to 1 pill vs. 2. I would love to hear what others have done. I do not want him to be in pain, but I can't believe being on all of that forever is a good thing either? Bandit and Deb
YAAAAAAAAAY FOR BANDIT FOR SUTURE REMOVAL!!! 🙂
Actually, your vet gave you some good practical advice. You've heard it before, but every dog is different! Every recovery is different! Every dog reacts to pain differently!
Trying a tapering off approach over the next several days will give you a good indication if you can phase them out, or hold steady for a lower dose for a bit longer. Make sense?
You're doing such a good job of caring for Bandit!
Hugs!
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
We were told to stay on the Rimadyl until the prescription ran out, so a few days after suture removal. On suture removal day, we cut out the mid-day dose of Tramadol (originally we had been on every 8 hours). Our surgeon also gave us the freedom to give the Tramadol as we deem appropriate. We eventually reduced from 3 pills each dose to one, then eliminated the morning dose (leaving just 1 pill before bed). I think we stopped entirely toward the end of the third week. We weren't on Gabapentin, so that did not play into it. For what it was worth, it was obvious to me when Otis no longer needed the Tramadol. So, if you are unsure based on Bandit's reaction, then it might make sense to continue or taper more slowly.
Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016. Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016. Lung mets August 25, 2016. Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016. Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.
Wherever they are, they are together.
Thanks for advice. I kind of think he doesn't need it as much but am afraid to make a drastic change since we have a dog sitter for the weekend. Wouldn't want him in pain and her not knowing what to look for or do. So I think I'll keep it modified as is and then try more modifications when we get home. I love having the support of others. You are GREAT!
I think that's a good plan, taper off after the weekend. Remember all dogs are different and some need it longer than others, so go with your gut feeling.
