I typed a whole long post and my fingers spazed on my cell phone and I think I lost it. I apologize if its here twice. Marshall has his personality back but he is acting like he was when he had OSA before we knew. Wanting to lay alone on couch and sleeping alot. He pants some and cries in pain. He has been on metacam and 8 days ago we added Gabapentin. I give him tramadol when I notice his pain is bothering him. What could be causing him pain? I can touch all over his incision and he doesn't flinch. Of course I have a sick feeling in my stomach that its in another bone. He went to stand tonight to get down off couch and fell over into the couch. We had to help him get down.
Thanks!!!!

Pain can be caused by so many things. If it's leg pain, it could be a strained muscle, a cramp, or too much activity too soon. Maybe his back is bothering him from learning to walk as a Tripawd. It's so hard to know. Maybe another visit to the vet would be helpful...sometimes they can see things in the gait or movement that we don't that tells them whether it's a leg, back, hip, etc.

Is Marshall taking enough pain meds? Sometimes the vet prescribes the lowest dose, but there is room for increasing. You should ask. Also, it might be better to try to stay ahead of the pain instead of waiting until he's already hurting...at that point it's harder to control. My dog, Seven, has severe arthritis in his neck and back. He has flare-ups and when they happen his vet has me give him the max dose of meds and then slowly taper off over a month or so to make sure the episode has passed.

I hope you get this figured out and Marshall is feeling better soon.

Hugs,
Carol

It's so hard to say. Gabapentin can make dogs dopey but usually the side effects are minimal. As Carol said, it's always best to stay ahead of the pain.

Meanwhile I would take a note of when these symptoms appear: what was he doing just prior, what happened when the symptom occurred, what helped him calm down. Note the time of day and the frequency, then discuss with your vet.

Dr. Mason wants me to have him seen by an Orthopedic Surgeon to find out where the pain is coming from and have X-rays. She said that at 3 weeks out he shouldn't be painful. I'm upset and I feel like this is the beginning of a nightmare. Tomorrow I will be back to being positive but tonight I'm having a pity party and snuggling with Marshall.
