Dear Nancy and Opie,

We're sending lots of pawsitive thoughts and tons of hugs your way.  We don't have any advice to offer, except perhaps to ask about anti-nausea drugs for Opie - Holly is on metaclopramide after her chemo and it seems to help alot.  If you're worried about dehydration, I wonder if he'd like to try one of Holly's favorite treats?  We freeze some canned salmon in ice cubes and she loves to eat them - her kind of popsicle.  Maybe he'd go for a few of those to help?  If he's not eating, though, even those may not work.

We're keeping you both in our hearts and our prayers.  And keeping all fingers and paws crossed that Opie has plenty of good days ahead.

Hugs and hugs and hugs,

Holly and Susan

Holly joined the world of tripawds on 12/29/2009. She has a big little sister, Zuzu, who idolizes Holly and tries to make all of her toys into tripawds in Holly's honor. And she's enjoying life one hop at a time!

Thanks so much to everyone.  The vet called and said to start giving Opie Prilosec and to cut the Deramaxx in half (= 50 mg).  I went to town right away and picked up the Prilosec and fed Opie rice and a little boiled chicken; gave him the 1/2 of Deramaxx and the Prilosec. He is sleeping right now.  His breathing is still a little off.  I mean, he is breathing relatively fast and shallow, but does not seem to be in distress otherwise.  He has normal poop and he showed interest in investigating a curly coated retriever that wandered into the yard (I coaxed the dog with some treats.  Her name was Frieda and her mom was so happy to get her back)  It was a nice day outside today and after Frieda's mom came and picked her up, Opie nested himself on top of a snow bank and enjoyed the weather for awhile.

I have my fingers crossed.  I think as Pam and a few others mentioned that it may have possibly been the Deramaxx.  I think tonight will tell.  Someone asked why the pain meds for lung mets.  Are lung mets not painful?  I don't know.  Didn't ask the vet.  All I know is that last week, Opie was in obvious pain.  I may not have mentioned that he is growing tumors by leaps and bounds all over his body.  Opie has always been a good lipoma grower, he has many, but now he has tumors under his skin that are more solid.  They range in size from pea to golf ball and there are too many to even count.  They are growing exponentially in size and number.  I opted not to have any of them aspirated.  Its kind of like, for what purpose?  My focus now is to keep Opie comfortable and happy and his tail wagging.

I just want all you tripawd pawrents to know that you all have helped me in more ways than you can imagine.  I feel like even though we have never met, that I have forged friendships incredibly fast and deeper than I would ever think possible in cyber space.  Thank you all.  I will let you know how Opie is tomorrow.  Nancy

Thank you Nancy for the update...I hope Opie slept well last nite and kept his rice/chicken down now w/ the Deramaxx cut in half.  You have Opie's best interest at heart....your focus being on keeping him comfortable and happy and his tail wagging.  This cancer shit SUCKS....just sucks.

Hugs to you & the Opster..

we're delinquent in our reading, but wanted to add on our prayers and blessings for opie too.  i'm just hopping in circles thinking of it all!!  my only recommendation is napping, as that and a snuggle with your human sure makes most things better.  our love to you both, gayle.

Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included).  She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.

Tripawd Family,

Thank you so much for all your posts, concern, well wiishes, thoughts and prayers about Opie.  He had a really good night.  No throwing up.  He even grabbed his ball this morning for me to take him out and play.  Posted on his blog this AM.  I guess from here on out we take it one day at a time.  Maybe he will make it at least until breakup so he can go swimming a couple more times, though I am not going to hold on to him for that if he gives me the signals that he is ready for immortality.  Thanks again!

PS.  I just read the salmon ice cube suggestion from Holly and Susan.  That sounds like a good idea!  Thanks.

Just read Opie's blog post about the meds ... and we're happy to hear he's doing better now! laugh

We know Opie is strong and a long way of from asking this question, but Jerry's blog post – What To Expect Next – from when his lung mets got pretty bad, includes a lot of related links that may be of interest.

Keep enjoying those days!

Oh wow, Opie! Don't scare us like that you crazy snow dawg!

First off, my pawrents want to thank everypawdy for being here for your Mom, Nervous Nancy. They were off goofing around all weekend, playing tourist and dragging Wild Boy Wyatt Ray all over Texas (oh waitll you hear what he did!). They are very, very sorry they couldn't be there at such a scary time, and are very grateful for the wonderful family that we have here, thanks everyone.

And, we are relieved to know that you are feeling better. These episodes can be scary but you know and I know that we dawgs are made of kryptonite and we are stronger than humans give us credit for!

Nancy, like Shanna said...one day at a time, it's all we can do. A lung mets diagnosis is heartbreaking, and we are so sorry to hear this. But we're so glad you told us so that we can be there for you. That's what we're all about, through good news and bad. And remember, as awful as it is to hear about mets, many of us dawgs can do just fine with them for a long time. It's what we all hope for, and in the meantime, keep on doing what you're doing and making the most of every day together. You and Opie are a great team, you can do it.

Sending love and healing thoughts your way from way down south....

Opie, I am glad you are feeling better.  I think one lesson our dogs teach us as we go through this journey together is to take it one day at a time and be so grateful for that day. Sending healing thoughts and prayers your way.
