I have not met with the oncology team yet (will do July 5) but what kind of money is a round of Carboplatin?   I really dont want to be blind sided.  And second, for osteosarcoma I have read its has the least side effects.  But has anyone used any other chemo meds and had success? Any idea what list of questions should I bring to the consultation?

Hello,

I can't help with your specific questions, my dog had a different cancer and did a different treatment regimen.  And I would guess that costs may be different depending on where you live.

Here is a List of Questions for an oncologist- a good place to start to get your thoughts organized.

Also, there is a section of the Reading List that has several links on treatment options, click on the link and scroll down to Tips for Amputee Pets with Cancer.

We have done two rounds of Carboplatin for Osteosarcoma so far. We are in Minnesota. Each round consists of exam, bloodwork, chemo, and medical fees. We have paid around $1100 for each round. Additionally, my Oncologist requires bloodwork 10-14 days after each round to check bone marrow. I do this at my regular vet which is $55.

We were going to do an experimental Immunotherapy, but that would have added $5000-$6000 more to the $4500-$4600 for just the Carboplatin.

Good luck with whichever route you take. Remember, there is no right or wrong choice when it comes to chemo or no chemo. You do the best you can with the resources you have.

Sending hugs!

Thanks for that info Shannon, I've added it to our Cost of Amputation and Chemotherapy for Dogs Discussion Forum topic:

And wow that's a lot of $$ for the immunotherapy treatments. Ugh! I had no idea it costs that much outside of clinical trials. What an eye opener.
