Hi all,

I browsed the topics to see if there was anything recently posted regarding this issue, and did not see anything, so wanted to make a quick note of warning to the community.  Many tripawd dogs (and even larger breed quads) have been prescribed NSAIDs as an anti-inflammatory, to help with joint pain.  These medications are known to cause ulcers in dogs.  A couple of examples are meloxicam and peroxicam.  Dieter had been on meloxicam for about 4 months and developed a large, nasty, bleeding ulcer.  Thankfully it was not perforated, but we still have had a rough few weeks.  Our vet team (which has now been extended) mentioned that there has been a trend of increasing ulcers in dogs resulting from increasing prescriptions of NSAIDs.

So, if your dog is on an NSAID, talk to your vet about the possibility of ulcers.  None of us here needs any more on our plates than we already have.

Yup just like people.  Dogs can be given Pepcid and Prilosec to help prevent them.

Thanks for the reminder! We first posted about this in 2009:
