Atlas went in for his second round of chemo today and the doctors were so pleased with his blood work (cbc) for the past 3 weeks and today that he doesn't have to go get weekly tests anymore!  Woo Hoo!  His WBC has remained in the normal range, good appetite, only side effect was being tired on day 2 and 3 afterwards.   His oncologist said this is usually indicative of how they will handle the remaining three treatments and they think he's doing great!  We loved getting such a good report today.  His lungs sound good and clear, physical condition is really good (bed sore all but gone), appetite and activity level... all the doctors were smiling so big when they came back in the room with him.  I think they are all secretly, some not so secretly, surprised and amazed at how well he is doing for his big boned size and having wobblers. I remind them every time that those old outdated statistics are wrong!  I was emailing with a vet friend who is in Kuwait at the moment and she is so genuinely interested in his progress - like its so foreign from what she's read or been taught.

Mommy and Daddy are not surprised, we know Atlas is in the AMAZING business.

Sooooo tired coming home from the hospital today.. it was a busy day.. two different vet offices....

But I'm a happy boy as long as I get to go home.....

Forgot to mention the letter to the Hospital Administrator worked unbelievably well.  They greeted us at the door and took us back to a room right away, we didn't even have to wait in the waiting room. Marc and I were like...whoa... Marc said, I think your letter worked.  The doctors took him back right away for his physical and then brought him back to us to wait in our little room. It took about a half hour for pharmacy to get up the meds but it was not a problem, Atlas actually took a nap while waiting because he had mom and dad with him. They took him, gave him his chemo and brought him back in 30 minutes and we were on our way home.  Yeah! Everyone at the hospital was spot on today!  Great day!  We are all sleeping good tonight!

Atlas, Sophie and their pet kitties have already started....

Such great news! So glad you had a better experience at the hospital this time. Most people are in this business because they truly want to help your pet. Once they knew what the problem was, I'm glad everyone was able to work towards a solution.

I'm sure I've said this before, but Atlas is such a handsome boy! I just want to kiss that white stripe on his head!!!

Right hind limb amputated 7/3/12 for OSA, started on alternating cycles of Carboplatin and Doxorubicin and oral Palladia. Single lung met 9/1. Met in the neck muscle removed 9/30. Large mass in sublumbar lymph node 10/2. Rescue chemo with ifosfamide 10/6. Mets to the rib and axillary lymph node 10/21. Started Leukeran and Pred 10/25. Wookie left this Earth for a far better place on 12/4/12. I miss you, Boo, you were my heart.

Atlas, you are one awesome guy!  Glad to hear such a great report card!!  A+'s all the way!!

And glad to hear the hospital is listening and working with you to better work with Atlas's needs.  Shouldn't have taken you writing them a letter to figure that part out, but at least they've taken care of the issues.

Hang in there big guy!!

Yay Atlas! What a great time it will be to just have at home time. No poking and prodding.

Atlas is so dignified. I'll bet he commands the audience when he walks in a room!

Spirit Shooter was a Miniature Australian Shepherd who was diagnosed with a MCT and had a LF amp 1/28/13 at 13-1/2 years old.

Shooter crossed the Bridge on 8/28/13, his 7 month ampuversary and two weeks from his 14th birthday.

Yippppeee! I'm just now catching up on your pawesome news and it has made my morning! Woooohooo!!!

Atlas IS amazing and strong and truly one-of-a-kind. His ability to overcome the odds is just rocking our world, thank you so much for sharing this progress report. I'm especially happy to hear about how the hospital has taken care of the situation and is on the ball now. This is proof that it pays to be a strong advocate. Good job Ma.

Three paws up for continued success!!!!

I quickly read your previous forums threads to understand just how monumental this is!  I'm elated for you!  It was a rocky start, for sure, but I'm glad you fought for Atlas and have made things 1000% times better.  That's pretty rockin'!  Hop on, dear Atlas!

~ Katy

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

Thanks everyone, we are so happy for our boy doing so well in his fight to beat the odds. we feel very blessed to have all our furry friends in our life.
There was also an unthought of perk to the hospital showing us into a little private room, yes we could put down his ortho mat for him to nap, but it also kept us from the nosey neighbors. Atlas most definitely commands an audience sometimes thats great but sometimes not so much. The past two visits we were ambushed, once by a man telling us how bad chemo was and that he would never do that to his dog and once a lady who was such a defeatist everything was dying. So it was nice to just have a quiet wait. big-grin
It so great to see him in good shape this morning with no added trauma to the elbow. In fact, we got a package today .... Miss Ann made Atlas an elbow pad and we are going have a present opening today - Atlas's favorite thing in the world - and film it.... Stay tuned...

Wookie, I probably kiss that white blaze at least two dozen times a day.

Three weeks, yippee!!  Just enough time for the fur on that shaved spot on his leg to grow in a little big-grin.

Great report, and way to advocate for your pup.  Like Kelly said- most people are in the business to help, and it sounds like they care about you and Atlas.

Well, pugs and Danes have at least one thing in common: NAPS!!!

Forgot to mention, we solved the dehydration problem!  Atlas wasn't trying to be dehydrated, it just hurt too much to bend down to drink.  we noticed his posture while drinking from the 12 inch raised bowl and decided to go higher.  When we got him a 17 inch bowl he started drinking like crazy!  Now...last CBC showed good hydration/hemoglobin levels.
