Our dog had a leg amputation three weeks ago for Osteosarcoma and had her first round of chemo (cisplatin) last week.  She now wets her bed at night and is drinking a lot of water.  She also cries out and jumps on occasion.  Has anyone experienced these side effects?  Thanks.  We are new at this.

Hi Maple, welcome to Tripawds.  Your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

I hope you don't mind that I moved your post here, the Technical Forum is for the geek stuff smiley

The crying out sounds more like phantom limb pain to me- many people have had luck with the med gabapentin for that. Here is a little information on Phantom Limb Pain.  Be sure you are keeping your vet in the loop with her symptoms.

We didn't use cisplatin, not sure about the side effects from that med.  HERE is a vet interview on the side effects of cisplatin.

How old is your girl?

Thanks.  We really are struggling with this.  Our dog seems so different.  The crying out for no apparent reason is the hardest symptom.  Appreciate the reply.

Hi Maple & family, how are things today?

Does she only wet the bed at night? For now taking her water up before bed is probably a good idea. I'm wondering if there's a chance she could have a UTI going on?

What I would do is start to track when these symptoms happen. Jot down in a journal the time & severity of the symptom, like the crying & jumping, so that way when you call your vet you can give an accurate picture of what's going on. But I would definitely let your vet know about the bedwetting, that's not fun for anyone.

How is her activity and appetite otherwise?

Hang in there, we'll help however we can.

P.S. thanks for passing along those great URLs Karen!

HI there,

Our tripawd has wet the bed (and even just pee'd on the floor as if she didn't know it was about to happen) a few times since her surgery (right rear amputation) and each time she has been on prednisone. As soon as she is off it, the incontinence disappears.

Not sure if your pup is taking this steroid as part of her treatment. Hope you get some answers soon, best of luck!

Thanks for the replies.  Maple (dog name) did not start her bed wetting until a few days after her chemo (cisplatin).  We are a little concerned that this has trigged renal insufficiency by damaging her kidneys.  She is not eating well but we can coax her to take ground beef and potato.  She has no interest in her kibble.  Maple was always an alert and energetic dog but the chemo sure has thrown her for a loop.  We are worried she won't ever be herself again.  The good news is she quickly adjusted to 3 legs and gets around extremely well.  Your concern and interest is appreciated greatly as we have not been able to get a lot of information since Maple's side effects are more rare.

Oh gosh I'm so sorry, I know this is scary. The good news is that if you have to stop because of side effects things do get better and life goes back to normal. It really stinks when your dog is the one with the rare side effect! Have you talked to the vet about it yet? I would do that asap.
