Hey Shilo

It didn't take you long to figure out how to train your parents, did it? Eating right out of their paws, that's how we like it. Big Grin

UPDATE -

Well yesterday we went back to the vet to get the staples all out. She healed really well & is getting back more like herself each day. She still has decided since her experience that she really doesn't like the vet anymore. Mary (a student in training) held her as she woke from her surgery and was with her the entire time. Shilo liked her then, but when they all came out to see her in the waiting room the growling started. They couldn't believe it, she was so sweet the last 2 times she had been seen. I told them since the amputation she has decided she doesn't like the vet and if they wanted to muzzle her I would understand.

They took us to the room and after a few minutes she (shilo) relaxed and let them take out the staples without incident nor did they muzzle her. I am hoping that she will see that not all trips are bad.. sf-frown

I have to say that after speaking with Mary (the only one who seemed to care at the time) she stayed with us the entire time. She even got the oncologist in there to give a break down of costs/options/ and he was a breath of fresh air. He seemed very knowledgeable and very blunt (which I appreciate). I did let them know that even though we were going to go through with the chemo I still was holding out for her to be of the 15% that rids the cancer with the amputation. Not great odds, but I will hold on to it as long as I can. smiley9

We have her first chemo treatment on Wednesday, and hope she handles it well. We did talk about the fact she didn't handle her pain pills very well (the not eating & drinking thing) and that I hoped she doesn't react to the chemo that way. She still is not eating like normal, and she has lost 14 pounds (pre vs. post amp) so I know she has lost weight as well. I am sure this is normal, I just hope her eating picks up better before the chemo starts.

Thanks all and please keep us in your thoughts Wednesday!!

Hi Shilo and family

Tazzie lost weight through the first chemo. However, he had torsion 6 weeks before which is why he was already dropping pounds entering the amputation. The first chemo was Adryamycin and did curb his appetite for one week. The 2nd time we gave him Cerenia at the time of treatment and his appetite was okay and the other drug, Carboplatin, did not affect his appetite, at least not significantly.

But despite what looked like a plummeting weight following surgery, I did start to get more weight on him following that first chemo treatment and now just watch to make sure it does not get too high. Being lean is good for an amputee, and you will probably find a comfie weight. What chemo drug are they using?

Hi Tazzie -

They are recommending 5 treatments of the Carboplatin. I have heard that it has the lowest side effects so I hope she does well with it. They said they can adjust the dosage if they need to and visit other options if she has problems. I think that we are going to wait on the Metasib (?) for if she starts to show mets since that is what it is designed for. Keeping our fingers cross we don't have to cross that bridge. 🙂

Jakemom's - Thank you for your support!!

Trouble had 5 treatments of Carboplatin.  She had minimal side efects, but did have some nausea starting about six hour after administration lasting for 4 - 5 hours.  They sent her home with anti-nausea med, can't remember which right now, and that kept the vomiting to  a minimum.  After the second treatment they started giving her the anti-nausea med as a shot before the chemo.  This worked better but she still had a little nausea.

I kept puppy pads handy, if she looked like she was going to barf, I grabbed the pad and put it under her.  It kept cleanup to a minimum and she didn't feel like she had to jump and run to the door.

She never lost her appetite, and other than being tired for 12 - 24 hours, she did very well.

It is great you mention that, for I voiced my concerns to the oncologist about that. They are going to give her something for nausa and send us home with nausa medications as well. I am not sure which one, but I hope it will keep the sickness part down. I just picked us pads for her as well so this will be great idea to have them around for her, especially if she can't make it outside.

She seems to eat a lot of grass since she is post-op is this normal?? I was under the impression they do this cause they are sick to there tummy's.
