We took our sweet pup in to get evaluated for the Osteosarcoma vaccine today and had her first xray since completing chemo.  The radiologist believes he found 2 tiny mets in her lungs. 🙁  She was dx'd 5 months ago and she's not even 3 years old.  These are all bad signs.

The oncologist said 1-3 months w/o an effective treatment.

We have no idea what is an effective treatment.  We can still proceed off-study in the hopes that her immune system will respond positively.  The IL-2 treatment is now up to $7K a vial and it's not guaranteed.  I know there is Palladia and dob-something, but I don't have the mental strength to read up on them.  I think she said that each one is only effective in 10-25% of dogs.  How am I supposed to choose?

She has been running around like a puppy in the snow, so happy.

I'm sitting here wondering if the chemo even worked at all.  Did we put her through that for nothing?

Getting news like that is heartbreaking, I'm so sorry. BUT, try not to think the absolute worst. First off, Lola is still Lola, happy as ever and living every moment to the fullest. Even if she was aware of the x-ray results, she would probably still behave the same way because dogs just don't fret about the future the way we do. Follow her lead as you cope with what to do next.

Now, did the radiologist confirm the mets or is another reading being done? I ask, because we have seen many members' dogs here come back with x-ray results like that, only to find out that the mets were just a spot on the x-ray.

And let's say they were mets . . . there are no guarantees of a timeline even with mets. Lola doesn't have an expiration date and nobody can exactly predict what cancer will do. Many dogs have outlived the prognosis and done really well even after mets were found. I'm talking some have lived for years without any disease progression! Seriously. Our own Jerry was one, and others have gone on way longer than he did. I'm not saying that every dog will but you just never know.

That $7k is a lot of money, wow! What it really comes down to is, what can you afford and what will give you the most comfort now that you have this information, if they are indeed lung mets? You need to be comfortable with the decisions you make, so that Lola will be happy. And whatever you decide on, know that there are no right or wrong choices. Every situation is unique.

For our Jerry's lung mets, we chose to go with metronomics . Many people have seen good results, and an equal amount haven't. Some oncologists prescribe it, while others say the latest evidence shows it's not as effective as once thought. But from what I've seen, it has less side effects than Palladia, for less money. I can't tell you how the vaccine would compare.

As hard as it is, try to stay hopeful, because that is key to her happiness, and of course, yours.

Sorry you got bad news, but Jerry is right. Don't jump to the worst-case scenario yet. There's still hope.

I'm assuming Lola was on Carboplatin? And Doxorubicin is one of the new options, along with Palladia? Plenty of people here have used Doxorubicin. We never tried it since my oncologist said it can be hard on the heart, and Rocky was heartworm-positive when he was younger. We did try Palladia after five rounds of Carboplatin. I was told it was 50-percent effective. It worked really well for Rocky for about a month and then the cancer adjusted.

I don't think anybody truly knows what's an effective treatment. Cancer doesn't play fair. What works for some people doesn't work for others. Make the best decision you can and go with it. Try not to second-guess yourself. The important thing is you're doing the absolute best you can for Lola. And Lola is running around the snow happy. Keep that in mind, because that's important right now too.

David and Rocky (and Baxter now too!)

Rocky had his right front leg amputated on Valentine's Day 2017 after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma.

He joined the September Saints on September 3, 2017.

He is the toughest, bravest, sweetest and best friend I'll ever know.

She completed Carboplatin in December. The xrays today were at the vaccine trial facility, but we are having them sent to our regular facility for a 2nd look. We figured it was good to have the radiologist who has read her other films to weigh in.

I think we aren’t going to proceed with the vaccine. I could stomach the off-trial cost if we knew the stats, but there just isn’t that much data on dogs with Mets AND I worry about complications b/c I don’t want her to feel worse. If she were in the study, the pharm company would pick up care for adverse reactions, but that would also be on us.

Since Lola was sensitive to the Carbo, her oncologist suggested starting with just Palladia.
