It is only one day since surgery and he has already exceeded my expectations. He is being lazy just sleeping on the couch. I am monitoring his incision pretty closely, he has a little seeping and is very bruised. The Dr. said as long as it doesn't get any more swollen or start to bleed he should be just fine. He seems to be comfortable, more out of it than anything.

Glad to hear Mel is doing well! Post-op swelling is perfectly normal. Jerry's blog post with information about fluid buildup may be helpful if you haven't already reviwed it ... Dog Leg Amputation Seromas: What You Need to Know

So glad Mel is home and doing well.  We were warned that the bruising may be worse a couple days after surgery, so don't be alarmed if that happens.  Get yourself some rest while Mel rests, you'll find yourself watching after him even when he doesn't need it 😉

Glad to hear that Mel is home.  Don't be surprised if he has some good days and some bad day for the next couple of weeks.  Good luck wit  his recovery.

Thank you everyone 🙂
I cannot even begin to explain how proud I am of my boy.
I took him outside for the first time and he was trying to PULL on the leash! i couldnt believe it. I wasn't walking fast enough for him. I know the pain meds will eventually ware off and he might not be moving as fast but he has already learned to get up on his own in a matter of hours. He is amazing.

Mel's Mom,

He will continue to amaze you, I promise. There is no reason why he can't do everything he did before.....just with a hop!!

It sounds like you are a good caregiver, just stay close and he'll let you know what he needs. most of all, lots of love.

Keep us informed on the progress, and remember to reach out and ask if you have any questions.

Yay for Mel! That's such good news that he's doing so well so soon after surgery! He will amaze you with what he can do. Keep giving him lots of love. Holly's bruising did get worse before it got better - some very lovely shades of purple and pink. Our vet had us ice the incision 3 times a day with a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel and that seemed to help her.
Best of luck over the next few days... keep us posted!

Just a little warning I learned from experience: Don't let Mel do everything he wants to do.  Limit his activity for a couple of weeks.  I know, easier said than done!

Oooo!  I agree with Emily's Mom!  Jack was a quick learner (like Mel!) which meant that I had to take him back to the hospital because his entire abdomen was bruised (broken capillaries due to over-activity).  He had to have tests for blood disorders and viral conditions, and ended up staying on mandatory bed rest at the hospital for 2 days...all because I walked him down the sidewalk and back too soon.  Sounds like he's doing super, and I LOVED your video!

I loved watching that video of Mel pre-amp surgery... What a ball of energy!!! Definitely keep him from doing that for a while... Wink

As everyone else has mentioned before... be prepared for some ups and downs while he's recovering... Just give him lots of love... healthy food, lot's of fluids (pain meds can cause constipation)... and rest.

Keep us posted on Mel's progress!!!

I take a break from following what is going on within this community and when I return I find that once again some extremely great members have offered great advice.  We could not be more pleased that Mel is doing so very wonderfully and as cautioned above, do not let him over do it too much.  I would also caution you to not let any down turn here get your spirit down.  There are often ups and downs during the first two weeks, but the general progression will be up.  As Ginny said, there should be nothing that Mel will not be able to do once he has fully recovered. Always keep a positive attitude around Mel, but from your postings that should not be too much of a problem.  Many would tell you that another pet suggestion is to remember to treat the spirit as well as the body.  However, on this count, you sound that you are doing great.  We always want to find activities that our TriPawds love and use that love to give them reason to fight.

Wishing you the very best, will attempt to follow your progress, and fully expect you to soon be celebrating ampuversaries with all the rest of us.
