Oh I thought Maggie had OSA. I don't think the link will be pertinent. Maggie's progress is encouraging. She is a senior golden too, 10-11?

I have reduced Blazes pain meds to the dose recommended by the discharge vet. I was giving him his pre surgery levels just because he is so grumpy on a good day I thought it was best to let sleeping dogs lie! He is a bit perkier. Isn't too enthusiastic about meals or treats but will eat. He lets me know if I hover too closely to encourage him to eat however! So I just let him be.

Fortunately he doesn't have to use stairs except for the gently sloping steps to the back yard. I prefer to keep him confined to the living room with us and have him sleep there too. We are back to using lots of baby gates! I find that Blaze gets stuck when he wanders to far out into the yard to do his business. This morning it was cold, 25 degrees, I went out with him and came in to fix his breakfast. In just a few minutes I found him laying on the frozen ground. I could not get him up and coax him back to the house. Because of his grumbly personality I ended up using his muzzle in order to move him and put the sling under him. He was not a happy boy! I got him into the house where he would be safe and warm. So now that his pain meds are lower he is a bit more willing to move about, but still wears himself out quickly.

Its such a balancing act! For the dogs on three legs. Managing pain levels and meds. Managing activity. Ensuring all functions are working properly. And trying to convince my wary boy I mean no harm and simply want him safe and well.

I hear you, Mary!  It's so hard to know what the right thing to do is!  Maggie is sweet and loving and she always wants to be with us.  She has been so patient with everything going on the last few weeks and she seems to be getting around better.  But she has been hiding the last few days, not wanting to be by us and that has me worried.  Her last ultrasound was three weeks ago and didn't show any signs of tumors elsewhere but of course the first tumor grew quickly so now I worry there is another one since the last scan and chemo will be for nothing.  I'd rather her last weeks/months with us be happy, not filled with feeling sick and spending hours driving back and forth to the hospital.  If I'm wrong, though, we will have missed a chance to extend her time with us.  This is one of those times I wish I had a crystal ball...

I hope Blaze continues to improve!

Mary and Kim, I know what you mean, it is very scary and unnerving for us to see our animals having such a tough time recovering and for us to keep worrying about the future too. All we can do is our best, and in time that will pay off and things will get back to a new normal. Try t keep in mind that when animals are feeling bad or trying to heal, they will naturally go hide, it's what they do in the wild so they don't show weakness to the others. Your furkids will get there, they are recovering and healing, it's just gonna take some time. Hang in there and post whenever you feel frustrated, it's good to vent here.
