Hi everyone.  Just thought I'd give a quick upate on Max.  He's doing great!!  We are now 10 months post amputation, and he has been on the metronomic protocol for a little over 5 months.  We get blood/x-rays checkups every 6 - 8 weeks; his last one was September 9, and everything came out clear.  I feel we are very lucky, in that Max didn't really have any side effects from his chemo treatments, and he doesn't really have any bad side effects from the metronomics .  So, we just take things one day at a time, and we're trying to do as many different and fun things with him as possible every chance we get.

One fun and different things we did recently was a professional portrait session with him and his little sis Linda.  A couple months ago, I bought tickets to a harbor cruise fundraiser in support of a local marine mammal rehab center.  They had a silent auction, and I won one of the prizes:  the portrait session with a local professional photographer.  She photographs children or pets.  Guess which we chose?Wink  Okay, we don't have any children, but if we did, we still would have had our dogs photographed!!

Anyway, it was really neat.  The lady was very patient, and loved both Max and Linda.  First we did some solo shots with Max, then solo shots with Linda.  Then shots of the two of them together.  The actual photography session probably took about 45 minutes to an hour.  But, she was very nice, in that she let us take Max and Linda off-leash as soon as we got to her house (the master bedroom is cleared out and serves as her studio) so they could run and sniff around and get their excitement out.  We get to see the shots in about two weeks, when she'll have them up on an online gallery.  Then, she'll do a consultation with us so we can pick out the specific shots we want.  She even said she would give us a digital file if we wanted to do Christmas cards!  So, we're really excited about this.

And, in about 3 weeks, we're taking the mutts back to Carmel-by-the-Sea for a weekend.  We visited for the first time in May, and we all had such a great time.  I'm telling you, if anyone is thinking about visiting Carmel, stop thinking and do it!  It has to be the most dog friendliest place on the planet.  We are going to stay in Doris Day's inn again, and just about everywhere (except the restaurant, of course) is open to pets.

Okay, that's it for now.  Hopefully I will have another great update in November, when it will be Max's ONE YEAR AMPUVERSARY!!  Scratch that, I WILL have a great update to report in November.  As always, my best wishes, thoughts and prayers to everyone on this forum, as we're all fighting the same war.

Hi Max the Mutt

I love to hear about you and think you are very pretty (I am partial to mutts of course - aren't we terrific?!?). You get to do lots of fun adventures and you certainly are staying healthy! I think I want to start metronomics ASAP!! I can't remember - are you also on Artemisinin ?

Hi Tazzie.  You are very pretty also! You remind me of our first dog, Shadow.  He was part Border Collie, and was darker in color than you, but your faces sure look alike!

No, we are not on Artemisinin .  We spoke to our oncologist about it, and he wasn't all that positive on it's use, so we didn't start.  We do use K-9 Immunity , though.  And most everyone hear has one or two different medicines for their particular metronomic protocol.  A Dr. Barbara Kitchell (from U of Michigan, I think?) prescribed our particular protocol.  We started out with:  Cytoxan (25 mg, one pill/day), Piroxicam (10 mg, one/day), and Actos (30 mg one/day).  After 8 weeks, we switched from Cytoxan to Leukeran (2 mg, 2/every other day).  If I remember correctly, Cytoxan can also cause crystals to build up in the bladder (??), causing some difficulty when urinating and blood in the urine (also painful), so we were also prescribed a medicine called "Lasix" (a diuretic) This was something that helps with urinating; this was only while Max was taking Cytoxan, though.   We started metronomics about 3 - 4 weeks after Max's last chemo treatment (he had six rounds of Carboplatin).

Our oncologist told us at our last checkup that if Max's next checkup (November) comes up clear, they will officially say he's in remission.  As I said, that would be the one year mark, and that's a very sketchy time for this disease.  But we're very positive he'll come up clear.

Talk to your oncologist, and good luck!  You're a beautiful pup!!

Max, if I am not being too blunt, do you mind telling me how much you weigh? And why did you switch from Cytoxan? Did you have problems with crystals?

I really appreciate the details of your metronomics protocol. We will probably be trying to work that out this week!

It seems we already have mets, unfortunately, so the goal is to cut them off!! We also need to avoid things like Piroxicam that are hard on kidneys. Even a dog's life can be complicated.

Max was normally 70 - 75 pounds prior to the diagnosis/amputation.  He is currently about 65.  It's slightly lean, but very much in the healthy weight range, and neither our regular vet nor our oncologist is worried about it.  At this point, we prefer to keep him a little on the lighter side, seeing as he only has one front leg!  Plus, he's pretty active, so that helps.  He's about 8 1/2 years old (we got him as a puppy, but we never knew his exact birthdate).

The cytoxan to leukeran switch is just Dr. Kitchell's protocol.  We didn't ask why; we figured she was the expert, and if that was her particular protocol, then so be it.  We were very comfortable with her, and she's all over the internet if you google her.  So we felt pretty confident that she was doing what she felt was the right thing for Max.

I'm sorry to hear about your mets, goshdarnit!!  I'm no doctor, but I know the whole point of metronomics is to help stop them spreading.  Max has never had a problem with Piroxicam, but I know there are other medicines that can be used, so I don't see that being a problem.  In case you don't know, these medicines can be a little expensive.  Fortunately, we don't have any kids (don't know if you do), so we were very lucky in that we just rearranged what we decided to do with our money to budget this in.  Instead of going on a vacation for us, we went to Carmel with the dogs; or we only go out to dinner once or twice a month now.  It's doable.  Please let us know how your appointment goes, and good luck!  Get in there and keep those mets down!!!

Wonderful update! Great to hear from you and that all is going well with our buddy Max.

Has everyone seen Jerry's video of Maximutt playing on the beach when we met his pack back in February?
