does anyone else out there have a dog with servere dysplasia have a successful front leg amputation ?? Maddie is about 6 yrs old - has bad or maybe even severe dysplazia - a little arthritis on elbows - the ortho doc and oncologist both offered amputation as an option - Maddies regular vet said if Maddies hips were perfect he would have NO reservations - but still he thinks that amputation gives the greatest chance for quality of life for a ong time - Maddie has osteosarcoma . Still he said if it were his dog he would do it .
Does anyone have experience with a big dog with bad hips >?? - Maddie is a Staff-Rott-Shep mix -weaights 86 lbs probably should weight 80- .
Surgery scheduled for Thursday .
Thank you -im getting a little nervous -- am I being selfish ?
I have a 2 year old Lab mix with severe hip displasia. He is a front right amp. His was done when I adopted him. He had an injury or deformity that had not been treated. He is smaller ( about 47 lbs) but gets around pretty well. We have him on both Metacam and Dasuquan. He had a bought with some pain a few months ago, so we started this. He gets on the bed, in the car, couch etc. I help him down a lot just due to my overprotective nature. Check out the Ruffwear harness , great for helping in those situations. I was told that building his hip muscles will help to hold his hips in place also. Best of luck to you, and NO, you are not being selfish. You just want what is best for Maddie. Lori, Ty and the pack
TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.
Hi there! Did you happen to see these replies to your first post from the other day?
It's great the vets think your dog is a good candidate. Best thing you can do for her is help her drop that weight asap and keep her slimmer than you think she should be. A slim Tripawd is a happy, healthy pup. Even a pound can make a huge difference in how they get around, or don't. See my first reply for more feedback.
Keep us posted on how surgery goes. We're here to help you through it!
