Hi all,
So our sweet Mysti is 2 weeks post right front leg amputation and doing wonderfully! I have never appreciated how resilient dogs can be until this experience. They are truly amazing!
Yesterday we were scheduled to start carboplatin. Unfortunately, her white blood cell count was very low, too low in fact, to start chemo. She has a slight infection along her incision site (that we are treating with antibiotics for 1 week), but the doctor (a normal veterinarian, not an oncologist) said that having an infection would elevate her WBC because she would be fighting an infection. She is outwardly acting very normal, great appetite, normal bathroom and activity level, even barking at the mail lady as I write this, ha!
I'm just curious if anyone else has had this experience, of low WBC prior to even starting chemotherapy? We will be contacting the oncologist, but are scheduled to repeat the bloodwork next week (possibly a second time) and then attempting to restart carboplatin in 2 weeks. I'd greatly appreciate any insight as now I am over-examining my otherwise happy girl 🙂

My baby Eurydice did 6 rounds of carboplatin but not if she would have an infection, just like your girl.
It is really no big deal, sweetie, just treat the infection and then do chemo.
And post some pictures of your cutie pie, that would be really great!

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)

Meanwhile, yep, it's quite common for this situation to happen and as Theresa said, not a big deal. It's more of a precaution so that's a good thing! You'll see lots of search results for "low WBC chemotherapy" questions like yours in our forums.
Enjoy the extra time to get more into Mysti's new normal, and try not to worry. Sounds like you have a great vet team on your side!

Yes it worked!
Seems to me (not a vet!) that the WBC would be low when a pup has certain kinds bacterial or fungal infections.
Hopefully Mysti is on the mend and those numbers will come up.

Wanted to give an update:
I heard from the oncologist yesterday. She said that she has seen a low WBC count like Mysti's before. It seems that maybe the leg that we amputated may have produced more that what her other legs are making. She said that we should see a elevation in levels soon and can start chemo!
Thanks for all the support! Keeping our fingers crossed the levels return to normal and we can kick this cancer's butt where the sun don't shine 🙂

Yippee! So glad your oncologist was able to calm your worries. I hope this is THE week for her to start blasting the chemo to outer space!
