Hi, Pfritz has had 6 chemo treatments and hasn't done well getting over the 6th one.  He had Osteosarcoma and a rear leg amputation. Now my vet wants to start him on a daily low-dose chemo regime.  I am reluctant as I'm almost wishing I didn't do the last one.  Does anyone else have experience with this or know of any research or studies about it?  I think it's a new treatment option.

Also pretty much since he's been on chemo he's been sick to his stomach.  He's been on Zofram or Cerenia and he's still sick.  I thought it might be the Metacam but I took him off that and it didn't seem to make him better.  The vet always says it's not the chemo making him sick but doesn't really say what is making him sick.  His blood work has been good too.  So any ideas from anyone or info on the low-dose chemo would be greatly appreciated.

Btw, Pfritz had his amputation 6/27/13, is close to 10 years now and is a 96lb Rottweiler.

Yes, we did the low dose Metronomic therapy (chemo).  Sassy did it from the time she developed mets & we had to stop our last chemo dose.  We did the cytoxin and a major side affect of that is that they can develop urinary cystosis like uti.  We stopped that and started Leukeran there are some good posts on the subject here.  Sassy had no side affects of the Metronomic therapy.  She only got sick once during her chemo and the cerenia helped.  Sassy survived 7 months with mets.

You will find plenty of information about metronomics here and in the blogs. Use the search function above to find forum topics or search all blogs here.

Our Jerry had osteosarcoma at age 8 and went on metronomics and K9 Immunity after we discovered his lung mets at about 16 months post-amp and he enjoyed life on three legs for another 8+ months. You can read complete details about Jerry's nutrition plan in the Tripawds Nutrition blog .

Our dog Cassie http://cassiewa.....pawds.com/ has been on metronomics using chlorambucil. She started with this immediately after her first chemo treatment in early February of this year (diagnosis was approx Jan 8, amputation Jan 23rd) and has been on continually since then. Two lung mets were seen in early Oct one more is is now present. They seem to be growing 'moderately' and she's done very well so far. We don't know enough to say it's due to metronomics or not though. With mets having appeared her oncologist is now recommending we go back to chemo, potentially 5 rounds. From what we've seen, I wouldn't hesitate about doing metronomics again. Cassie wasn't bothered at all, the only issue was the cost of the pills and the hassle of getting prescriptions refilled amid a drug shortage.

Thanks for the feedback.  I did start his treatment with Cyclophosphamide and Lasix.  He seems ok with it and had a few days where he was really happy.  I think the Metacam makes him sick though, I had him off it for about a week and he seemed like his old self.  Now he's been back on it for about a week and he's not as happy.  It upsets his stomach.  I did get some Rimadyl and may try that after a wash-out period.  Again thanks for the feedback.  It really helps to talk to others going through the same things. big-blink

Different breeds can have very serious side effects from NSAIDs. But every dog is different. Jerry had immediate signs of intestinal distress on Carbrofen (Rimadyl), but managed well on Metacam for nearly two years. Others have reported just the opposite. Please consult with your vet, request another medication, monitor bowel movements closely, and keep us posted!

Hey Phitz! Sounds like at least you are able to start narrowing down some of thecauses of you not feeling very peppey!

As Admin said, every dog is different. Hapy Hannah did NOT do well on Meloxicam (thinkit's just another name for Metacam) but tolerated the Rimadyl.
Another dog who owned me.......not good on Rimadyl but okay with Meloxicam...go figure!

Really glad he seems to be tolerating the new chemo and paws crossed for gettinghim back to his hapy self full time now!

Hugs! You're a great mom!

Sally and Happy Hannah
