Zeke, my 9-year-old pit bull, had his left leg amputated three weeks ago due to osteosarcoma. The first two weeks were ROUGH. The drugs made him confused - lots of yelping, panting and sleepless nights. Two weeks post-op - he had his first of four chemo treatments. Zeke didn’t get sick - but, for about 6 days, he was NOT feeling well. Then one week out - “Zeke” was back to himself. He went on a hike yesterday, slept ALL night, is using the doggie door and running to the fence to antagonize the neighbor dog. 😂 So, I’m wondering if I should expect him to feel like crap for a week, after each chemo treatment. What has your experience been?
Hi Becka and Zeke! Thanks for sharing your experience, hopefully others will chime in.
We did not do chemo for Jerry but from what I understand, if Zeke continues to feel badly after chemo, the oncologists will fine-tune the dosage so it agrees with him. Be sure to let them know about his experience so they can do that.

Hi. We're about in the same boat. Our dog,Murphy, had his amputation 5 weeks ago and just had his second chemo today. He's on Doxorubicin. The first dose gave him instant decreased appetite. He didn't eat that night and vomited a couple of times the next day. We started anti nausea meds and it took about a week before he was eating his normal amount. He also had less energy. This time they reduced his dose and gave him anti nausea meds during the chemo. They sent him home with a 6 day supply of meds. That being said, every dog reacts differently and I've seen stories of no reaction on the same med. Zeke is a cutie. Give him a scratch for me!

We did 6 sessions of carboplatin and many months later 4 sessions of Doxorubicin.
In both cases my baby Eurydice did not show any side effects.
She took Cerenia (for nausea) one day before plus for 3-4 days after each session and a blood test was done prior to each treatment.
What does the oncologist say concerning Zeke’s reaction?

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)
We're doing a lot better after the second chemo with Murphy. The vet was very proactive on the nausea and they reduced his dose a bit since his white blood cells took a hit last time. So we're giving him Cerenia for the nausea for a few days as well as him having it during chemo. He's eating normally and his energy level is much better this time.
