Greetings, Tripawds family. Sorry it's been so long since we've posted actively. (On days/weeks when I end up working extra-long hours, I'll still 'lurk' on the forums in the wee hours from home just to send positive thoughts and good vibes to friends we've made in person and here online—a few shoutouts if you scroll below.* I hope you're feeling them even if you don’t see them in writing.)

So, the good news on Lexie...she's had a lot of happy, hoppy times the past few weeks--even 'springy' as our PT vet said at our session a week ago Saturday. The bad news: stupid cancer has reared its ugly head again. She has a tumor on her amp side in her neck, and it’s growing.

We had a fine needle aspirate done at our primary care vet (the poor girl had an ear infection, too) and a lung scan. Unfortunately it looks like another pretty aggressive soft tissue sarcoma, and the mets we’ve known she’s had all along are growing and there are a few more of them. We have an oncologist appointment midweek.

Her breathing is more labored here and there and panting will sometimes get more frequent, and she’s more sensitive to the humidity, but she’s been so playful and always eager for walks and really enjoying herself when she feels good--which is still about 85% of the time.

As much as I seriously wanted to scream with the latest test results (and I definitely did let myself bawl here and there) I’m trying to stay focused and ‘Be More Dog ’ and model my girl, who lives each day to the fullest.

At our primary care visit after we looked at the lung scans together, our vet said, “Seriously, if I just saw Lexie for the first time without knowing her history I’d say she’s a really happy tripod with a bad ear infection.”

I have to look at the positive. Lexie is 14, had lung mets when we got the cancer diagnosis, has had pancreatitis and Cushing’s for years--plus more recently a luxating patella, hip dysplasia, arthritis, along with this unusually ultra-aggressive form of an STS--and we’re coming up on her four-month ampuversary in August. I can’t ever believe I was on the fence about amputation. These extra months with her have been such an amazing gift.

She still wags and hops around every time she sees her vest coming out and she knows we’re going out for a walk or for a car ride. She’s just a happy, happy girl. (For folks who are new to the Tripawds community—especially for anyone who is second guessing themselves during that tough first month—see the video of Lexie at the end of this post.)

Thankfully I had planned to take some much needed time off anyway this week, so we’re doing some fun ‘bucket list’ types of things between our upcoming onco visit and PT.

Btw, I should mention that I think the K9 Immunity Plus supplements we've had Lexie on have been a factor in her energy level and playfulness (and possibly the newer Chinese herbs she’s been on too, though she hasn’t been on them as long).

Thanks so much to all of you for the positive thoughts and prayers for Ms. L.

Hugs to all (+shoutouts),

Deb and Lexie

For anyone with an older dog or anyone who is scared during that rough first month post op (days 10-30 had some rough patches for us), here is some hope:  And make sure you keep coming back here, especially on those rough days, and keep searching on relevant topics as needed and using the forums. Someone will always be here in this great community for you.

On to shoutouts...

*Sally, Merry Myrtle & Happy Hannah, we feel your positive thoughts daily and the videos and stories and pics have helped us smile through some tough times. Love seeing all the MM joys and firsts, and there’s nothing like Sally encouragement, cheerleading, and words of truth combined with laughs when we need them most. Smooches!

Elizabeth, Tanner & Angel Jake, wish you could have seen the ear-to-ear smiles at our PT session when I showed the vet and tech the Lexie & Tanner video -- and many others, too. Lexie is blowing kisses to Tanner right now…

Cheryl & Zach, Lexie says hi and she hopes her fellow senior tripawd buddy is still doing great!

Esther, we’re still thinking of you and your Angel Snoop, and hoping that you find more comfort and peace every day.

Alison, we knew along that Shelby sent Jasper to be your next dog, and that you were meant to be her Mamacita all along. Jasper and Shelby both remind me so much of Lexie in our first year together, with all the quirks and adjustments and Jasper's Basenji (though not always typical B) personality.

Lori and Ty Guy and Bonnie and Angel Polly, we knew those husbands would come around!big-grinThinking of both of you…and your angels on the bridge are definitely watching out for you.

Cassie and Domino, we hope cold laser is helping Dom and that he’s staying away from matches. (No more scares, Domino…even though mom is an LVT you can still scare her! So happy she saved you!)

Sahana & Angel Leland, even though Leland was only a Tripawd for a short time, it’s so kind of you to still be here offering support and encouragement to others. Can’t wait to see pics of your new boy!

Michelle & Angel Sassy and Karen & Spirit Maggie and Amy & Spirit Libby and Lori & Tucker, and anyone I’ve missed…thanks for being such amazing cheerleaders for all of us.

And last but not least, Rene/Jerry (and Admin Guy and a shoutout to Tripawd Spokesdog Wyatt Ray , too), thanks again for creating this amazing community. Lexie wouldn’t be here today if it hadn’t been for you. Huge hugs and high-fives!

Deb and Angel Lexie* Diagnosed at age 13. Tried radiation first; wish we had amputated upon diagnosis (even with lung mets). Joined Club Tripawd April 2014 & Lexie loved life on 3 legs! Advice: Start physical therapy as soon as your vet clears it, especially hydrotherapy if available :-) See Lexie pics here.

Deb,
I am so sorry that this effing disease is rearing its head again.  I can't believe how well she did at the meet up and she had mets too.  Amazing.  All you can do is continue what you are doing and Be More Dog and to borrow Sally's phrase.  BREATHE, BREATHE.   and eat lots of chocolate lol.

keep us informed of how she is doing and let us know what the oncologist says this week

hugs

I get the lurking thing- I just finished working for the local Shakespeare Festival, I was usually only here nights or early mornings. This is the first weekend I've had off in a couple months.

I hope you guys have a great week, around the onc visit.

Cancer wins by taking away joy- so based on that I say you and Lexie are winning!

Dear Beloved Deb and Our Super Hero Cougar Lexie!!!

You and Lexie have touched our lives on sooooo many levels! And here you are again, touching our hearts with your unfailing compassion for others while you and Lexie are dealing with more challenges! WAIT.....what the heck are we talking about "challenges"?? Let's put this back in perspective from Lexie's viewpoint. LEXIE AS AN EAR INFECTION AND THAT'S NOT INTERFERING WITH HER QUALITY AT ALL!!!! clap

One of THE best things that has happened to this community is knowing you and Lexie...knowing your devotion and commitment to her well being...knowing your rock solid resolve to do what's in her best interest every step of the way. Lexie is a reflection of your strength, your grace, your quiet resolve to see ech other through this journey with steely determination.

And I'm so glad you've been receiving the positive energy we've all been sending your way...and yes, we've been receiving yours! "They" say, if someone crosses.your mind, that person is thinking of you also. You and Lexie are in my thoughts everyday...and always with a warm fuzzy in my heartsmiley

Lexie is an incredible beacon of hope for so many with extra "challenges" faced with the decision to amputate in the face of "poor statistics"!!! HA!! Yet another example that statistics and "prognosis" don't mean very much around here!! Lexie has raised the bar for what's possible when things seem impossible. Deb, you are soooooo tuned into Lexie, soooooo connected to her...she "speaks" to you and you listen.

The heat and humidity do play havoc on dogs...add being a senior tripawd into the mix and you will see more panting for sure! Stay commited to living in the now..and I KNOW you will because your love for her is that strong! And in Lexie's NOW, she does not give a rip about any new "whatever" showing up are any adjectives used to describe the "whatevers" and scare humans! Lexie's not scared or worried...Lexie is.happyy and that is all that matters....a happy FOURTEEN YEAR YOUNG SENIOR!!!!!! This dog is a miracle for so many reasons!!!

Alrighty, we've got a lot of celebrating to do so let's get this pawty started!! Lexie has a gazillion extra large buckets she's looking forward to working on well into her fifteenth birthday!!!

I don't know if you saw one of Happy Hannah's videos of one of her "buckets"...M&Ms, ice cream, Resse cups, cupcakes, Hershey Kisses, more ice cream, pie, steakand on and on! And yes, deer poop! And yes, she got little bites of everything for months!

Lexie' continuing journey is already legendary around here and that video...OMD....that video will inspire others facing this journey forever!!!

Take lots.and lots of pics.and make sure you include some with you in them! Sleeping, yawning, eating, wagging....wagging ones are good....and then share with us when you can!way-cool

I will never, ever forget all the wonderful souls who were at our VA. Tripawds Pawty.....human souls and doggy souls...what an honor and privilege to be in the presence of heroes. And thankyou for your very, very kind shout out. I read it to Merry Myrtle and she slobbered on my tablet...I think it was her way of blushing!

Gotta go look at that great video for the hundredth time!!! LOVE IT!!!!

Wrapping you in so much love and covering you with a cool blanket of "dog"!

Sally and Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Deb,
I am so sorry the ugly "c" is rearing it's super ugly head again.....but you seem to be living and loving life with beautiful Lexie, and that is THEE most important thing. You have been given great advice again, especially Sally's amazing celebratory list of "special" necessities. I do say celebrate, because Lexie's life has been an incredible 14+ years of all that is good in life (minus illness). Celebrate everyday, and enjoy each day to the very fullest.......you have given her the best life ever.

Keeping you and Lexie in my thoughts and prayers,
Love,
Bonnie & Angel Polly

P.S. One day hopefully soon, I WILL get that new special Angel Polly sent new yellow Lab pup.......

Good morning Deb,

So sorry to hear about this latest struggle - but applaud your decision to celebrate each and every moment with Lexie.

Lexie and you have been a wonderful example of "being more dog" and continue to do so even in light of this recent hurdle.

Lots of hugs and snuggles for both of you,

Linda and Tucker

Deb! (((Hugs))) and thank you for the shout-out and knowing (what most did) that Jasper was indeed my gift from my angel. 🙂

You are such an inspiration - you and Lexie ... truly living life to the fullest and appreciating every moment and being more 'dog'.... I am sorry to hear about the current struggle but I know, as with all things, you and Lexie will celebrate every day and second you have.

14 years old is amazing!!! And with all those ailments ... we all can only aspire to live half the life Lexie has had!!! Keep kicking my friend ... you are wonderful!

So much love,

Alison & her Shelby fur-ever in her heart (and little Jasper too)

Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Deb, I was really sorry to hear the latest news, but am in AWE of your strength at this time. Your attitude is amazing, it's exactly what an animal wants from their human at a time like this. No matter what happens next, if you can keep staying strong and looking at all of the gifts you've received from Lexie through the years, after amputation, etc., your time with her will be unforgettably beautiful and your heart will be open to so many more life-changing lessons. I hope you get some good news from the onco, like it's a manageable thing. Let us know OK?

Meanwhile, if you'd care to share your K9 Immunity experience, we have a post going here about others' experiences, if you have time.

Give that girl a lot of love from us OK? xoxo

Oh Deb we have been thinking about you guys. Every since our party, I catch myself thinking about Ms. Lexi and smiling! I still can't get over how she lit up and started playing, like she was a puppy again. I'm so sorry about the news. I KNOW Lexi is not going to let it stop her from living her life to the fullest and we all know you will make sure that happens. Lexi is so lucky to have you for her mom, she is so loved. I will send out some prayers for good news from the onco. In the meantime, Tanner says to give Lexi lots of kisses from him and to tell her he's got her back!

Quick update: Thanks for the good wishes and thoughts and prayers and Lexie love, y'all! (And Elizabeth, I -love- that pic of Tanner and Lexie!

Onco vet not surprisingly says that the new tumor isn't good, although in spite of that and her growing lung mets when he listened to her lungs things sounded good. I think he expected her to seem worse given the X-rays, etc.

He asked how she was feeling and I said she's been feeling really good for the most part...even spunkier and 'springier' as our PT vet put it, than she had been in June, and he asked what I wanted to do (knowing that I'm not a fan of traditional chemo for Lexie given her major dislike of needles and quality of life issues). I said that since she seemed to be feeling stronger overall why not give give oral chemo a try one more time, and he liked that approach. We tried Palladia a couple months ago but it didn't seem to agree with her at the time (GI issues) but we're trying it again, so fingers and paws crossed.

And apologies that I'm overdue in starting a new thread about the Chinese herbals she's been on for a month. Short version for now: Holistic vet initially prescribed Tang Kuei and Quiet Contemplative to help her overall system get stronger. He didn't want to add an anti cancer specific herb until after she had been on those for a few weeks. He was a traditional Western DVM before becoming certified in Chinese veterinary herbal medicine and is a fan of doing complementary herbs with traditional oncology, so after our onco visit yesterday and Palladia addition he added something called Dispel Stasis aka Wei Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang.

I should add that our oncologist is a very Western traditional vet and into empirical comparative research but given Lexie's condition he is supportive of whatever I want to try. That said he is a fan of Yunnan Baiyo which is a mushroom based Chinese herb, and he has seen enough research to believe in it for slowing the growth of tumors. We still have Lexie on that as well and even though it isn't supposed to do anything for lung mets I noticed that she had shallower breathing and more panting when I ran out and our shipment was delayed, so we're definitely keeping her on the YB.

Thanks again to all!

Deb, I definitely think others need to know that chinese herbs are an option, thank you for updating us all about it. Everything you are doing for Lexi sure seems to be working! Is her health perfect, no, but is she spunky and happy HECK YES! Major WIN!! We had Jake on YB and I swear it gave us a few extra weeks with him. Should we ever, god forbid, be in a spot where we have to make decisions like this again I will whole heartedly push towards Chinese medicine. I just have to say that every time I hear how Lexi is doing, I feel like screaming TAKE THAT STUPID CANCER!! She has won on so many levels. She truly is an inspiration here!

Thanks for the update and yes a post like that would be awesome, but don't feel like you need to write that post anytime soon. Just spend every second together and keep doing what you're doing, she's feeling good!

Your vet sounds fantastic, I like that kind of thinking.

She has TOTALLY WON THIS BATTLE! She is a ROCK STAR!

Deb,

Wow, Lexie is amazing. Having gone through all that and still happy and hoppy at 14. Sounds like you have a great attitude about her newest diagnosis and will "Be More Dog " come hell or high water. Good Luck Little Warrior.
