Everyone, you're so wonderful for giving your thoughts and concerns.

Last night (Thurs) I did call the vet. She called me today. What I could explain to her over the phone... I was a work and many people were listening... she also thinks LB could probably benefit from a change in meds. He's currently getting Rimadyl 75mg twice a day. I don't believe my husband has given the Tramadol during the day since Mon or Tues. The vet also asked if he has taken all of the antibiotic but as she looked the records, she noticed that none were dispensed.

Needless to say, the vet is quite concerned and even though she has 2 emergency appointments coming in tonight (It's a 24 hour hospital) she wants to see LB tonight rather than tomorrow morning.  She's hoping that if a change in meds is in order, he'll start feeling better tomorrow.

So as I was parking my car here at home after work, I saw LB waiting for me at the door. Just like his normal self. Oh, did I gush over him! That was the first time he met me at the door all week. He wagged his tail.

I thought I'd treat him to a special car ride tonight so while were driving with the sunroof open and wind blowing through our hair, I took him to Petsmart to pick out a new toy. That was the happiest he's been all week. His tail was wagging, he was meeting people. He even gave a stranger a big kiss on the face! I haven't even gotten any kisses yet! Then that nice stranger and his wife bought LB one of those special decorated dog cookies. How sweet. Then this doggie of mine...on the leash, mind you...wanted to run through the parking lot to our car. Now that's my Muppy! Then we went through the Wendy's drive thru and I got him a plain grilled chicken sandwich. Looking at him now, I think all of that excitement has him tuckered out.

Well, he hope he's up for another car ride in about 15 min when we go to the vet. The last couple hours made me feel like my boy might be coming back.

Thanks again, everyone.

Back from the vet. Quite positive. Would you believe he gave the vet kisses? I told her that LB hasn't given me kisses in the last 8 days. Anyway, she says he's indicating he's still in pain from what I explained and how he acted. I already knew that but I don't have that degree. She prescribed Gabapentin for a few days along with the other meds. She also thinks that LB could be starting to turn that corner when I told her that he greeted me at the door earlier and then ventured out and about for an hour.

So The Boy got a dose of the Gabapentin about 45 min ago. I'll let him out for the night and I hope he'll want to take his usual spot on the bed tonight.

GREAT UPDATE!!!!!!!    GREAT UPDATE!!!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂   HEARING HOW LB IS GETTING  HIS SPARKLE BACK  HAS ME GRINNING EAR TO EAR 🙂 🙂 🙂

WHAT A SPECTACULAR DAY YOU GAVE LB TODAY!!!  GRILLED CHICKEN, DECORATED COOKIES, ACTING LIKE A ROCK STAR..... he has to be thinking the recovery thing isn't so bad after all!! 🙂

So glad LB is getting his pain meds managed better AND getting on an antibiotic!!   Tell hubby he needs to stay consistent giving those meds!  Once pain gets a headstart, it's harder to get back under control.

You're doing an EXCELLENT job of watching over LB!

Sleep well tonight...sounds like LB will get some good zzzz's!

GREAT NEWS MUPPY LB!!! Well done! What a schmoozer you are... Strangers buying you cookies! 🍪 what a lucky boy! Your vet sounds wonderful! They really listened to your concerns and have come up with some great solutions. I do agree with Sally though, it's important to keep up the timing for LBs pills. As Paul was once told, you have to stay ahead of the pain cycle.

Stewie would like to know the secret for stranger schmoozing cookies out of people please....

Sloppy kisses from Stewie👅🐾

LB had his first dose of the Gabapentin last night around 9:40 or so. I woke up between 1 and 2 and checked him. I thought he had passed away! Instead of him being curled up in a ball, he was on his side with his leg stretched straight out, his eyes were half open and he wouldn't respond to his name or to touch. His body was still warm. Deep breath. I somehow fell asleep but woke again after 3am. His condition didn't change. Ok, he's half way through this dose. Let's see how he is closer to the 12 hour mark... Well, my son woke me up at 745am and said LB was sleeping in my older son's room. Sounds like a good sign that he got up and moved, right? Well, not really. He's still unresponsive and his breathing is shallow. Called his vet... well, the receptionist (she did the overnight shift last night).  Doc was busy w/patients this early already but told me to stop the Gabapentin and see how he does, he should perk back up.

LB is in the 11th hour of this dose. I sure hope the vet is right.

How much was his dose?    Were the Gaba and Tran given at the same time (which,  tw, is okay)?okay,

It can have a sedation effect in some dogs.  Plus, he was probably soooo exhausted vrom the pain and all ghat tail wagging  and excitement from yesterday it added to the "possible sedation" effect.

How is he now?   Update as soon as you can

LB did pep up about 13 hours after the initial dose. He even ate his usual size meal shortly afterwards, which made me super happy. He even stayed outside longer than the time it takes him to pee. He wandered further away from the house like he used to do. He pooped behind hubby's truck (ooops, hope Dad doesn't find it accidentally) and acted like he was going to follow the path up the mountain like he used to. I called him and he came back right away.

Later this morning someone came to the house and, boy, LB didn't waste any time getting up and rushing to the door, barking of course. Fur even stood up on his back. Oh, my protector ☺.

Since it's the weekend, I've been in charge of the Tramadol instead of hubby and I think it's making a difference. His tail isn't totally between his legs. It may hang straight down or curl up and out like it's supposed to. I'm giving him 2 tablets, hoping that's just enough to do the trick. I have been on Tramadol a few years and remember what 2 tablets made me feel like. After having 3 orthopedic surgeries in a year, I know how important it is to stay ahead of the pain.

I took him for another car ride, hoping to keep his spirits up (and mine).

Oh, about the the doses of Rimadyl and Gabapentin... I did not give them at the same time. The Rimadyl was given around 8pm right before the vet appointment. The Gabapentin was given when we got home, about 9:40pm. Eh, maybe that's roughly the same time...? I'm telling you, I thought my pup had passed away. The blank look on his face, his lips were crooked and his legs were outstretched. Let's get that picture out of our minds.

So hopefully things will continue on the right track.

Oh hey, Daddy's home and my Muppy is barking his head off...we're in a power failure right now so LB can't see what's going on, ha.

Hi everyone,

I am new to this as I just joined Tripawds yesterday 🙂  I am in the same situation as LB's mom (and all of you were).  I have surgery scheduled for this Sunday for my 9 year old black lab baby boy.  I am so scared.  I know he'll be ok, and most likely will be happier than what he has been going through, but still.  It has taken me a long time to come to this decision as he has soft tissue sarcoma in his right front paw.  After months of doing alternative herbal therapies, it has now come to a point where it has grown too big.  It must go.  But from what I hear STS is highly curable once removal of limb?  God I hope so.

I hope LB is doing ok!  Please post an update so we can hear how he is doing.  I am praying for good things for you and LB!

Welcome to the club nopawdy ever wants to join! Best wishes for your pup, what's his name? As cancers go, a soft tissue sarcoma is indeed one of the "good ones" or at least one that comes with less chance of recurrence.

Thank you so much! My boy's name is Rocky and he is such a love.  I sincerely hope I didn't wait too long to go with amputation.  Back in December, which is when he was first diagnosed, I couldn't see amputation as an option, so I did what most people in this forum did, and that was a whole ton of research into the disease.  I put him on a regimen of herbs and supplements and it actually shrank!  But about a month ago it started to grow, and grow and grow.  So now it's pretty large and time to pursue amputation.  I ordered a harness for after the surgery, but other than that, I really don't know what to expect.

I will start another topic too as you suggested.  I hope I can figure out how to get back to the right one 🙂  Wish me, and most importantly, Rocky, lucksmiley

I guess I wasn't prepared for the emotional roller coaster that follows the amputation. This second week has gone from one extreme to the other and back and forth. I'm hoping everyone has had ups and downs even 1 to 2 weeks post-op. Well, no, I don't hope everyone went through this. Gosh, I hope you know what I mean.

LB wouldn't look at me if I talked to him. He would totally turn his head and look behind himself when I'd talk to him. He wouldn't sleep in my bedroom at night much less sleep on his blanket on top of my bed. He seemed so distant. He wasn't my dog. It was hurting me to think that maybe the cancer was found too late and that he was trying to tell me what I didn't want to say out loud. My boss would ask me how things are going. I know she was only being polite so I wouldn't talk about it much for fear of boring her. I bet you all are like me as far as if someone asks about my dog, I'll talk about him all the live long day. Besides, if I told my boss how things were really going with LB, I would have started to cry.

Then this past Friday (2 days ago), my husband questioned how long LB should be on all these pain meds. So, I know it may sound cruel but I did cut back on the meds. I am relieved to report that he seems fine. I did give just one pill this afternoon and will see if he can go until tomorrow afternoon. I think it's making a good difference in him. Not only did he sleep on his special blanket on my bed all night long but he woke up and came downstairs on his own while everyone else slept. No coaxing and bribing required. Oh my goodness, everyone, that made me so happy. He laid in his usual spot as I cooked his meals for the week. Right now, my Muppy is laying on the couch with me as I type this.

Please, I hope the worst of this recovery is over. I just want my boy back. I want our remaining time to be as normal/happy as if none of this craziness ever happened.

Hi Muppy LB & Mum

i have to start by saying that what you are feeling is perfectly normal and yes Stewie was up and down for the first two weeks... I have included the link to his blog from his 2nd Week of recovery. You will also see that we needed to stop all of Stewie meds, in order to start again, figuring out what works for the pain, but doesn't hinder his mental & physical awareness.

http://stewie20.....a-tripawd/

It sounds like LB was pretty comfy and having a good day. Every day may bring a different challenge, but it was into Week three that I started seeing daily improvements, with very few fall backs. I have held on to all the positive moments in a day, as that is what I believe will continue to help Stewie in his recovery.

Stewie is now 7 1/2 weeks post amp and although he is not yet back to his normal self, he is definitely starting to show us parts of his new self and I look forward to each daily improvement. It was in the last 2-3 weeks that I saw his core muscles improve And his movements have been smoother and with a little less effort.

Keep us all posted, it sounds like you and your husband are finding a good balance between the two of you. My husband and I have often compromised in the middle, in order to feel comfortable about what we were doing together for Stewie.

Keep up the good work and three paws up to your good days!

Sloppy kisses from Stewie👅🐾
& all the very best from his adoring pack,
Petra, Paul, Mr. Spike, Chester Molester & Miss Lily 🐾🐾🐾❤️
