Hello, Lando was diagnosed in August, had amputation and now going through carboplatin chemotherapy. He is doing GREAT on three legs. Chemo is exhausting. The closest location for the Aratana trial for us is 2 hours away. They said it will be five visits and all day, with the injection and monitoring. They also wanted four doses of carboplatin while our vet only does three doses, but a higher amount. Any thoughts?

Hello Lando and family, welcome. I'm so glad to hear he's doing pretty well! Anatolians are so pawesome. Be sure to read about Cemil the Anatolian, who thrived after his diagnosis and lived a happy life wayyyy beyond anyone's wildest dreams!

That's terrific that he can participate in the trial! I haven't had firsthand experience with a Tripawd going through it, but many have. Here's what we've written about the Canine Osteosarcoma Vaccine, which should give you some insight into what it's like.

As for the number of doses of carboplatin, it's been shown in quite a few studies that four (instead of 6) doses is the optimal amount, which is why the clinicians want Lando to have the same regimen as the others in the study. Did you ask your vet why they are only doing three? And also keep in mind that as the vet's customer, it's your right to request four so that he can participate.

Stay tuned for feedback from others who have been through the vaccine trial. You can read about their experiences in forum posts like these but do keep in mind that study participants cannot discuss many things about their experience in order to keep the study results from getting skewed.

Thank you, it is so nice to have this warm welcome. Thank you also for all the references above. I think the vet was open to the idea of doing 4 doses, still the dose he got is higher than what the study vet gives dogs, so I need to look into this. Also, Lando had his second round of carboplatin 6 days ago. Today, his remaining back leg, the right because he lost the left, seems weak, like when he walks, cannot seem to put all his weight on it and it bends a lot. I don't know if he is just tired from the chemotherapy, or if I should call the vet oncologist.
