My cat Mona came home with Buprenex and Metacam. She had very bizarre behaviours (from being sweet and calm to suddenly racing around, and even escaping from the house) which I thought was due to the Buprenex. She was only on it for 3-4 days and the vet said it was okay to keep her on only the Metacam (anti-inflammatory and pain killer) until she had her staples removed. She became much more relaxed after the Buprenex.

Perhaps you can talk to the vet about the Buprenex. Perhaps Harley no longer needs it and the vet may have a better solution. I encourage you to look at the links Jerry provided.

I hope you find some answers to support Harley.

Harley will have her sutures removed next Wednesday. We did take her off Buprenex. She is only on gabapentin and onsior now. Harley was on Buprenex and Gabepentin prior to surgery because she had a painful cancerous tumor on her right rear leg. Hoping that she will be better after next weeks suture removal like your Mona.

just wondering if you kept Mona confined to a crate or a confined area while she was in recovery for the 2 to 3 weeks? we have Harley in a large dog cage padded and seems like she is depressed for being in there but that was on advice from our veterinarian. we let her out several times a day for litter, food and water. someone in the family is always watching her during recovery.

Thank you for so much for your response it’s greatly appreciated!

Also please consider starting your own thread so we can more easily follow along with Harley's recovery and you don't get lost in this old thread.

The Three Legged Cat forum would be a great place to start your own thread.  And we LOVE pictures!!!

Hi Rosalie,

Harley's vet is probably being very cautious to ensure he heals safely. Mona was only confined to a bedroom where I was able to work during the day and also slept in the room at night. After the second night she would hop up on the bed with me. After she started to escape from the room I would carry her out to an area where she could sleep in the sun. She also enjoyed areas where she could look out a window.

Many of the cats recover in a room where they can't squeeze into hiding spaces or jump up to high spaces. Mona's vet took her to his house for the first night after her amputation and kept her in a bathroom with a heated floor and lots of attention from his children. Of course they need lots of sleep but also need lots of attention and may even want to play.

Once the stitches are out I think most of the cats have the freedom to go back to their regular routines.

You should let the vet know if you think Harley is still having some pain.

Kerren

p.s. as suggested please start your own thread so we can easily follow Harley's recovery.
