Just got another call, the red blood count has fallen even more from this morning. She's definitely bleeding internally. The doctor recommends one round of the blood transfusion and if this doesn't work then it's time to say goodbye. Total blood volume has got from 24 to 20 to 18... they say she has a 50/50 chance at this point and the definitely recommend the transfusion.  We'll know how she reacts in a few hours.

The doctor said this is the worst reaction she has ever seen to carbo. They're wondering if there is something else going on that is making her decline so fast. She mentioned tick born infections like Lyme or Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever that (I think) they're testing for to find out more.

I can't even see my computer screen at this point.

I don't even know what else to say other than I'll let you know how all this pans out in a few hours.

We're saying lots of prayers for Kensington that she pulls through this...my heart goes out to you....

Kami

My sweet golden Mackenzie.  She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2  although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home.  She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009.  She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes.  I love you Mackenzie!

I can only offer support for you during this difficult time for you.  None of us know what is ahead on this road.  Sometimes it just doesn't work out as we expected.  That certainly does not mean you failed.  You made every decision with Kinsington in mind and with the intention of giving her the best quality of life she could hope for.  Please don't blame yourself for somthing no one could have expected.

Sending healing thoughts to Kinsington, and calming thoughts to you.  We are all here for you.

I am so sorry to hear about your dog's reaction!  Did they ultrasound her spleen to make sure that there isn't a lesion there?  If it is just the chemo then her bone marrow should be able to recover after the transfusion.  I have only seen this once but with a different drug (CCNU). I will be sending you good thoughts.

I'm sending prayers for Kenzie and you too.

I can imagine how terrible you feel, but like the others have said, you didn't know how it would turn out and you made your choices based on your love for Kenzie and hope for a better quality of life for her.

I'm hoping to hear good news soon.

I'm so very sorry to read about Kensignton.  I'm praying the transfusion helps.

We dealt with low platelet counts, as well (we do not know if it was a prolonged reaction to chemo (CCNU/Lomustine) or if the Histiocytic Sarcoma metastasized to the bone marrow).  Several tests by machine showed no platelet detected, with some visual counts estimating 4000 or just none being found.  We never had to deal with nosebleeds or any other signs of bleeding, though.

I'm so sorry you are having to go through this!!  I often wonder if choosing chemo was the right choice, as well … but I am trying to remind myself that I chose chemo out of nothing but pure love.

Hoping for good news …

Amputation on 11/10/09, due to Histiocytic Sarcoma in left elbow. Angel Harley earned his wings on 06/24/10.

We just got back from the hospital, they let us come in and visit her. She was definitely happy to see us, she even stood up for us when she saw us and cried. It was so great to be with her, to sit with her...  She's one sick pup, but I'm just praying and hoping that she pulls through.  The doctor said we'll know more in the morning (unless things go from bad to worse over night) how she takes the transfusion.

I can't thank you enough for all the support.

I'll let you know when we hear anything more. Have a good night...

So glad you got to see her and spend time with her.  Sounds like she isn't done fighting if she got up to see you. More good thoughts, more good thoughts, more good thoughts.

Heather and Kensington,

Words cannot express how sorry we feel for you both at this time. I also feel very bad about not reading about this earlier, for Miss Cherry had a similar but very mild experience like Kensington.

At the time of Cherry's initial diagnosis, the ultrasound show a growth found on what the oncology/surgery team felt was her only functioning kidney. Since the osteoscarcoma was our main focus, the amputation was scheduled and she began her chemotherapy (also carboplatin) just hours after the surgery – just as soon as her body returned to room temperature. Her second chemotherapy treatment occured three weeks after the surgery. Her main difficulty at that time had been a total loss of appetite from the chemicals. However, about a week after the second chemotherapy treatment, Cherry began to dump large amounts of blood in her urine. This was just days before Christmas, so her local vet perscribed antibiotics and we tested the urine for any trace of infection. Later, the ultrasound showed that the blood had come from the growth on her kidney. I would not concent to the exploratory surgery to determine the exact nature of the growth, so we will never really be sure if it was totaly separate from the osteoscarcoma or if it was a leason from the osteoscarcoma (mets). It really did not matter, for the treatment was the same, continued carboplatin. Thus, I put myself in the same camp as Pam – Tazziedog, and would be looking for any additional leison. Also, we were able to keep Miss Cherry for more than a year after this very scary episode.

People often wonder why I suggest they keep a detailed journal during this journey. Well this is the reason. You can view my description of exactly what I was seeing via http://home.com.....onth02.htm.

I am so sorry that I came so late to this discussion. You will be in our prayers!

Oh thank you for the updates.  It so heartwrenching to have these bad turn of events.

I'm so happy that you were able to see her.  Knowing how much she is loved will make her pull all of strength to make it.  You know she will try as hard as she can and that's all you can hope for.  Her will to live sends a big signal.

Please know how much we are pulling for her.  And please let us know first thing tomorrow.

HUGS

She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
