Hi, I am new here and I am a worried mom.  My cairn terroir just came home today after having his right back leg amputated.  He is sleeping but seems to be breathing heavy, can pain meds cause this?  I am not sure what to expect the next couple days.  Thank you for any input or advice.  I don’t see a lot of sleep in my near future.

thank you

Hi bellacooper, welcome. I'm sorry you guys found yourself here but you've come to the right place! What was the reason for the amputation?

Yes, pain medication can cause heavy breathing. To be safe, it's always a good idea to let your vet know if you are worried. But for the most part this is typical behavior for a dog just home after surgery. What pain medication is he on?

You're right, the first couple of nights are worrisome. While you're not sleeping you may want to check out Jerry's Required Reading List and the Tripawds What to Expect series of articles. We also have our e-books library for more details about post-op care.

Hang in there, things really do get better.

Your future posts won't need approval so post away.

Recovery is no picnic for the first week or two, so stay connected  and we'll help ypu navigate  through it.

Ypir sweet pup is dealing with major surgery, adjusting  to three and dealing with shaking off hospital meds, anesthesia,  etc.

What pain meds is he on, dose and frequency?  How much does he weigh?  What was the reason  for the amputation?

Resting is exactly what he needs right now.  Just ahort leashed potty breaks and back in for more rest.  He may not feel like eating much and may not poop for a few days.  Drinking  and peeing are important  tjough.

As Jerry said, most likely  the hard breathing is due to pain meds, but definitely  bring your Vet into the loop.

We look forward to hearing more about your pup and how he's doing.  Again,  stay connected  and let us know how we can help.  Revovery doesn't  last furever...it just seems like it!

Hugs
