So I decided to put this in the right spot to get some advice. I posted some pics of my lovely and her new furry sister - who is a quad-staff, around 3 years old and SUPER cute! - under hopping around and mentioned her foot lump there. Now that we have a diagnosis, I figured I should post again.

Lil miss Happybottom seems pretty unaffected by her MCT but as we all know, it will definitely get ugly at some point. Her primary vet, who we LOVE LOVE LOVE wants me to take her to the oncologist for a consult but I already know the Palladia route is more than we can afford, or so I assume based on my research. I've read over several of the posts I could find on MCT but hoped I could get some ideas on what I should be asking the oncologist when we visit.

For background, the tumor is growing between the pads on the bottom of her remaining left foot. Primary vet feels it's a terrible spot to try to operate on and of course, there is concern about exposing her to anesthesia in the first place. No real chance of removing the thing from what I was told and I'm not sure I'd want to remove any part of her foot/toes in the rear anyway.

I know there's the possibility of using prednisone/antihistamines to help slow things down. What else have you seen work? Obviously, Izzy is very old (nearing 13) and we are approaching her 1st ampuversary in Sept. I would LOVE to celebrate it with her so appreciate any advice!

Amy, Izzy the Wonderpup and silly Stormy, too!

Hi Amy,

I'm sorry you and Izzy are dealing with a MCT.  My pug Maggie lost her rear leg to a MCT and had several additional tumors.  Mag's little sis Tani also had recurring MCTs although hers were all on her torso.

The location of the tumor is tough- how big is it?  Probably impossible to remove and get any kind of margins.

When Tani's mast cell came back in 2011 (first 3 tumors removed in 2007) she was 11 and dealing with many other health issues.  I didn't want to put her though a big surgery so she had two tumors removed under a local anesthetic using a punch and a couple stitches each, but before the path report came back 2 more popped up.  At that point I decided that taking tumors off was not going to work so I just left them alone.  I had two vets recommend palladia but I felt for Tani that it was not the right thing. She lived to be almost 15 and did not pass from mast cell.

I don't know if the location of the tumor would let a vet get it off with a punch.  One risk would be that getting only part of the tumor might make it hard for the skin to heal, and it also could come back.  In Tani's case we never had recurrence at the same spot even though at least one of the tumor removals did not get good margins.

I treated Tani with diet and supplements.  She had terrible arthritis so was on rimadyl and eventually adequan injections.  There is some talk that anti-inflammatoris slow tumor growth so maybe they helped with the mast cell.  I also had her on K9 Immunity Plus, fish oil and other supplements for the arthritis.  We also saw a holistic vet who helped me choose a diet to help her fight off the cancer.

I would ask the oncologist what all the possible options are, that is what I always did.  Even knowing I would not choose surgery I still wanted all my options explained.  You could ask about all the chemo drugs available to treat MCT, there are more than palladia.  Unfortunately kinivet is no longer available in the US but Maggie took 2 different chemo drugs.  Chemo may not be very effective without the tumor removed and it may be too expensive.  But still ask about all the drugs available and the side effects.  The other treatment they do is radiation.  I don't know the cost but it would mean putting Izzy under anesthetic many times so you probably don't want to do that.

In my experience anytime we aspirated a tumor, or even just manipulated it the pugs would be on benadryl and pepcid.  Mast cell can cause an allergic like reaction and affect the stomach, definitely ask the oncologist about those meds. Maggie was on prednisone as part of her chemo treatments.  It can reduce inflammation but does have side effects.

Good luck with the oncology visit.

I did see the pictures you posted, and congrats on Stormy!

Thanks for all the info, Karen! I do have Izzy on K-9 Immunity plus as well as GlycoFlex to help support her joints ... she creaks and cracks with every hop, God love her.

I've given her a half dose of Benadryl each night to try to help with inflammation (and in the hope she will lick her foot less ... that and my killer sock and strechy tape routine) and she really doesn't seem bothered by it. She hops around as usual, but I've noticed she gets winded fast and pants sometimes. Of course, we live in NC and it's hotter than the hinges of hell and although we've got great AC in the house, it still is the south in summer. The panting could also be the prednisone. I just want the panting to be insignificant!

Anyway, I'm feeling a little guilty as I've got a lot of travel for work in the next few weeks and will be lucky to squeeze in the oncologist visit before I have to leave. She's still got 5 doses of prednisone (every other day to taper off) and I've upped her dose of K-9 Immunity to help boost her up. Her food is grain free and I'm careful about what she eats so hopefully those things will work in our favor.

Funny side note: I made chicken and broccoli for dinner tonight and Izzy was begging for the stems. It's been a while since she's had any broccoli and as I was typing this, she decided to go upstairs to bed. Tooted with every hop! hahahahaha  Killing me!

That Karen knows her stuff! You got some great insight and the ground work for questions to ask.

I've had many dogs on Pred for various reasons. If I recall, panting did show up in some of my dogs as a result of the pred...no biggie.

I love the broccoli story! Broccoli toots! Now that is a treasured forever memory!

Sending love and hugs

Hi - we did just start Pofi on a routine including Palladia and it is astonishingly expensive.  We are alternating with low dose chemo orally - 3 x a week Palladia and 4 x low dose Cyclophosphamide with an anti inflammatory daily.  Was supposed to be Piroxicam, but he got sick from that, so Rimadyl at the moment.  Pofi has STS rather than MCT.

Some studies say Doxycyclene can help shrink some tumor types, too.

Has Izzy been on Metronomic chemo?

Lisa, Minneapolis

On October 27, 2016, nearly 6 months after amputation, and 18 months since his cancer likely started, we lost Pofi to a recurrence of Soft Tissue Sarcoma in his spine quite suddenly.  His canine sister also succumbed to cancer on March 1, 2019 - we lavished her with our love in the interim, but life was never quite the same without her only real canine friend. Cliff kitty had to leave us, too, suddenly, in August 2019. Lucia kitty grieved all these losses, but helped us welcome two new Lurchers into our home and our lives, Shae and Barley.

Thanks, everyone!

Lisa, we've not done any chemo on Izzy for the OSA (which prompted her induction into the tripawd club) and her lungs were clear 6 months post amp, so this is a new wrinkle or lump, as it were. Given her age and the cost of those types of treatment, we've done all palliative care and simple changes to a better grain free diet mixed with fresh foods and supplements.

Was thinking about adding Apocaps but waiting for feedback from the oncologist. Izzy sees her on Tuesday - I will update!
