Hello.  My greyhound Paul is now almost a month since his amp surgery.  He has had 2 vaccine and 1 out of 4 chemo treatments.   He is doing pretty good except for the typical red, white and platelet counts being low that is associated with getting chemo.

He will be resting and all of a sudden he will yip and jump up or down from wherever he is and just stand there.   I usually check him out and he seems fine.   It seems to come out of no where.   I am guessing that maybe this is what phantom pain is?  Do any of your dogs do this after amputation?

Glad to hear Paul is doing well😎

Talk to your Vet about putting Paul on Gabapentin,  which is a good med for phantom pain .  From your description,  certainly  sou ds loke thst could be rhe case.  One thing we've  seen on rare ocassions is a rare staple left in at stitch removal.  Just throwing  that out too as a rare possibility.   A Bet can advise you on both possibilities.

Keep us posted....and give Paul a smooch for us.

What is his activity level like?  Does it seem to happen after he has been more active than usual?

We most often hear of phantom pain coming closer to surgery but it does come up later in some cases.

My little rear amp Elly jumps out of her bed and looks at her amp side occasionally and she is more than 3 years post amp (car accident).  She was fully healed from the amp when I got her so I don't know if she had episodes closer to her surgery.  When Elly has episodes it seems to happen after a busier day than usual for her. I always attributed it to muscle spasms around her surgery site but I'm wondering if phantom pain can happen for years since it does in humans.

If it happens again you might try and see if you can feel any muscles in spasm or if the muscles in one area on Paul seem really tight.  If that is what is causing it you can try some stretching and massage to keep him looser.
