Hello everyone

Firstly i would like to start off with saying that this community has been so friendly and with lots of information helpful for new tripawd parents. Thank you everyone!! Leo is almost  3 weeks post his rear leg amputation now and he also got his first round of chemo 3 days back. He is doing well and is stronger than his parents. He got his staples removed 3 days back and waiting for his scabs to fall off. He hurt his other rear leg paw pad which has been peeled off. We were suggested to keep him off of concrete and it is now covered in bandage. Will have to remove the bandage in couple of days and see how it is healed. We are slowly weaning off using sling when walking around at home but helping him while climbing stairs.

He has been whining a lot this past week, i was worried if he is in pain, But vet says at this point the incision should not be that painful and gabapentin, rimadyl should be good, it could be due to boredom.  Has anyone experienced this "whining" is there anything that helped in this kind of situation. And what kind of play time did you allot 2 weeks after surgery and when did you start giving him short walks.

I am planning to get him ruffwear summit trex boots for his paw pads but i am worried about his front legs as i have seen reviews saying that they hurt dew claws. Did anyone use them , how did it work. And anyone tried toddler socks?

I am sorry i have a long list of questions. I guess am being too worried!!

Thank you

He got his stitches out? YEAH! High five! That's a huge milestone!

Hmmm. What happens if you pay attention to him when he starts whining? Does he settle down? Have you tried giving him a massage to see if he hurts anywhere? Neck muscles? Lower back?

The incision shouldn't be painful and yes he's on some good pain medication. BUT many times new Tripawds start experiencing other pain that comes from getting used to being on three legs, and additional therapies or different types of medication can help. Did you know that the Tripawds Foundation has a canine rehabilitation therapy reimbursement program? If you take Leo to a licensed rehab / physio therapist, the foundation may pay for your first rehab visit . These therapists can usually find painful areas that are easily missed by vets who aren't used to looking for it on Tripawds. We highly recommend visiting one.

It has to be so difficult having a new Tripawd with broken paw pads, I'm so sorry! As for the boots, it really depends on the dog's feet as far as where the top of the boot hits, either below the dewclaw or above it. I think the only way to know if the boots will fit is to try them. A high quality pet supply store in your town should have them, I would try them on in a store to see if they work for Leo.

Don't use toddler socks, he can slip while wearing them. Have you seen our traction ideas? Boots or socks are good for short term situations but for the long term it's just best to help your pup avoid areas where his feet will slide or get cut up.

He does settle down when we pet him, these past 2 days he is sleeping in the night but he wakes up in the morning sit and start whining. Thanks for the information about the possible muscle pains, will look into that and see how he reacts for massages. It's great to know about the rehab program.

I am planning to use boots along with socks when he is up an ready for walks, and socks alone right now when he is walking around in the house and during potty breaks, until his paw pad heals. Do you have any idea about keeping his paw pad wound covered or to leave it open( when he is walkin around in the house) until it heals

Hmm. If he is waking up in the morning there is a good chance that his pain control isn't lasting through the night. To me it seems that if his whining was boredom related it would happen later in the day. How about talking to your vet about this symptom to see about adjusting his medication dosage and intervals?

Boy, I've never dealt with an issue like this so I'm not the best person. You can ask our Fairy Vet Mother Dr. Pam and see what she says, as well as bring it up with your vet if you get to them first. Let us know the answer, I'm curious.

Regards to pain vet suggests that the pain meds he is getting should be sufficient at this stage of healing, and it might be boredom mostly. But if i am still concerned that he is in pain i can give him codeine.

During his last visit they covered the paw pad wound with bandage and asked me to change if it gets dirty. Right now i am keeping it covered, i will ask in detail during my next appointment and let you know.

Thank you:-)
