My dog had his front left leg amputated 11 days ago and it's been a very slooooow recovery!  The latest is that part of his incision is infected and needs to be treated with laser therapy for several days to see if that helps the skin heal.  If not, they want to do more surgery.  In the meantime they also switched the two antibiotics he is on to see if the infection is resistant to the original antibiotics, so they also took a culture of the infection.  He has been going in daily for bandage changes since he came home from the vet post-op one week ago.  He moans a lot, pees on the floor (which he never ever did before)(we now have him in doggy diapers when we leave or overnight), and often stands and stares like he's lost.  Anyone ever had this kind of thing happen to their tripawd??  TIA!

Welcome, your future forum posts will not require moderation.

Sorry to hear about the issues your dog is having. Is his name Wrigley?

A quick forum search for incision and infection returns a lot of discussion about the topic. You can also search all blogs here .

Infection is rare, but it ha happened a few times over the years. Please consult your vet, and if you have any concerns about the care he is receiving, it is never too late to get a second opinion. We always recommend seeking care at AAHA accredited hospitals.

Best wishes! Please keep us posted.

Bless his heart. Keep us updated!

I have nothing to add regarding advice for an infected incision, but I'm here to support!

It's so hard to watch our fur-babies endure. Harmony would stand like that a lot, but only when I had put something on her (like her winter coat) that she didn't like and that was her way of vocalizing her disdain for the garment. We used to laugh about it. It's amazing how you begin to understand their moods and reactions.

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

Such a handsome pup! Love his avatar picture.

Take a few deep breaths, it does get better!! This recovery period can be a little rough for about two weeks, or even three! And you have a few extra "challenges" thrown in on top of that!,

Just curious what pain meds he's on. My Happy Hannah had to stay on pain meds going into three weeks as she had a really slow recovery too. Some of the issue could possibly be pain. Also, some of the same symptoms could incicate being loopy as a result of pain meds! Crazy, huh?

Infection can certainly make dogs feel lethargic. Does he have a temperature?

I know Lori (Ty's mom) will see this and encourage you to have him checked for MRSA . She'll fill you in kn that.

And we are all big on second opinions around here!!

Is he eating, drinking okay?

Have they checked him for bladder infections, etc?

Has he had any "up" days yet? Has there been a time when he could have overdone it?

Why was his leg amputated?

PLEASE keep us posted okay? Weare all right here cheering your pup on!

Hugs and love!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
