Marley has been panting more and more since last night. Antsy yesterday, then started panting in the evening, today she's trembling quite a bit and panting a lot. The surgeon thinks it is a side effect of the Tramadol so she's telling us to stop giving it - cold turkey. So she won't be on ANYTHING. Thoughts on this? She has liver issues so NSAIDs are not an option. She said to call if she seems to be in pain. She's been eating great - clearly not in pain right now. Wondering how long others were on pain meds? Marley just had her surgery on Monday...
Also, she won't lay still! Keeps wanting to go outside.... it's 32 degrees here today. Also don't want to have her overdo it. We're worried about her knee on her remaining back leg.
thanks everyone!

If my memory serves, Genie was on Tramadol 50mg every 12 hours for a week, plus Metacam. She was lucky not to have any of the side effects many tripawds here have experienced. It's been a few days already since Marley had her surgery, so personally, I think the vet's suggestion was reasonable, i.e. cold turkey. But you are the best person to tell of Marley is in pain. The vet initially prescribed 50mg 3 times a day? If you are worried that Marley would have discomfort or pain by discontinuing Tramadol cold turkey, perhaps cut down the frequency to 1 per day? or whatever fits Marley.
The vet may have a reason for stopping the meds cold turkey. Give it a shot and you will know within the first day whether or not it affects how Marley is able to get around. As long as he isn't showing signs of pain resting which would be from the incision, and it doesn't slow how much he wants to be up or act like he is stiff when moving around he will be good to go. And you can always request another type pain reliever.
We took Trouble off all pain meds within 3 1/2 weeks. We dropped her dosage in half for a few days and then stopped it with no side effects.

I think as long as she is eating and moving around, she could be just experiencing withdrawal.
Me, I was on Tramadol 3x a day for a week, then 2x a day for two weeks, then once a day for a few days after, then nothing.
Lots of dogs go through withdrawal symptoms, but if you're still worried I would call your vet for peace of mind.

Tazzie also could not have NSAIDS so she just had Tramadol for about a week. I gave her 3 to 4 tablets twice daily and then just stopped. Her panting had more to do with needing to go outside than with the meds but all dogs are different. She also took gabapentin to prevent phantom pain and I think I did that twice daily for 1 week then once daily for 1 week. This drug is safe for the liver and the generic is very cheap and available at a human pharmacy in case Marley needs it.

We had so many problems with Paris and the meds after surgery. In fact I found Tripawds while desperately searching for help on line. We made the decision after nights of no sleep and her crying out(which I thought was pain) to cold turkey take her off everything and within 48 hours she was herself again.
Good luck with getting Marley off the meds and having her back to normal. Take care.
Gineej & Paris
Grateful for every moment we had with Paris…..no regrets!
Honoring her life by opening our hearts & home to Addy!
Amazing what those pain meds can do to them! We took her off the tramadol - she had her last one fri morning- and by Sat she was so much better! Sunday and last night she was only up once to pee. No more panting or trembling! also no more being antsy - back to her normal self!
thanks everyone,
Holly and Marley
Cherry's dad here,
We had very bad reactions to the Tramadol also. Things got much better once I removed it from Cherry's routine. However, this was not the only drug which gave Cherry problems. Her first chemotherapy treatment was literally hours after the amputation, and after exch of the four treatments, we gave both an appetite stimulant and anti-nauseous drug. While I will not say that they did not help, I will tell you that Cherry improved quickly just after taking her off all the drugs. Drugs appear to really take it out of the girl include even the slightest of sedatives used to help get good x-rays. Maybe that is good...more effective chemotherapy?
Good luck and trust that you know your Marley best.
Holly, that's terrific! Thanks for the update.
Isn't it amazing how much these pain meds, which are supposed to help, throw our dogs off kilter? Strange!
Great to hear she's on track. Keep it up.
And thanks for the great advice Cherry!

I'm glad you asked this question, because I was wondering too. I still had two Fentanyl patches left (they last three days each) and the vet said it was fine to put one on him. But he is so sleepy, I am wondering if I should just switch to Tramadol - I have that too and he has tolerated everything fine.
It does seem that every dog, and every vet recommendation, is somewhat different. It's hard to tell with the strong silent types...after reading the responses here I think I'll switch to Tramadol for a little while and consider weaning him off. I'll see what the vet thinks.
Glad Marley (and everyone else) is doing well!
Delilah was on the Fentanyl patch and Tramadol 3 times a day. The patch came off yesterday and she is no longer in that sleep mood. With just the tramadol she seems much happier, now it is hard to keep her down. She was also on another med that was making her very wierd and we took her off that after one day. She was also crying out as if in pain but I think it was just the durg feeling she didn't like.
Keep us posted.
sferris, how long was Delilah on the Fentanyl patch? Cooper's is due to be changed this afternoon. He's been very sleepy and sedated; how much of this is necessary healing and how much due to the patch, I don't know. I'm going to call the vet later but not sure whether to continue with the patch or switch him to Tramadol only.
After her amp, Nova came home with a spinal catheter in and I had to inject morphine every 12 hours for 2-3 times. Then we switched her to Tramadol, which to me was the worst nightmare. She was panting and pacing and freaking out. The vet said to cut back or go cold turkey, so I went cold turkey after only about 4-5 days. And she was just fine and back to herself, and it was such a relief to have the panting stop.

Hang in there, that's really all you can do is play it by ear. We're betting he'll be just fine without it.
