I'm gonna bet it is the pain killers. My vet is at a conference so I have to wait for a call from the other office vet. I read up on Tramadol, the pills I've been given, and it can be a side-effect in some cases. She's still quiet and resting.

Sorry to hear about Roxie's seizure... I've never heard of any of the other dogs on here having a seizure post op... but hey, there's always a first time! It's possible that she was eventually going to have a seizure and the trauma of the surgery and meds brought it on... or it maybe just be a side effect from the meds. Hope it's nothing serious!!

Jake's Mom

Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!

Roxie and Brandy,

I too am familiar with real seizures with Allie, my wife's Sheltie who we lost to cancer in April 1008.  So I will say that Cherry suffered something that look very much the same while on some of the pain-killers.  I took her off the Tramadol and the shaking disapeared, but check with the vet before doing anything this dramatic.  Since Cherry's chemotherapy treatments started just hours after the amputation surgury, she was on a whole hoast of chemicals, so it may have been the combination and not any single drug that caused our problems.

Take a deep breath and stay calm until you contact your vet.

My vet has gone to a conference. I did some reading on Tramadol and it can be a side-effect in some cases -rarely but possible, so the other vet said we could try some different pain meds. It hasn't happened again

Brandy is doing well again now and eating much better. She seemed depressed for a couple of days -not sure if that was medication wearing off or the reality that her leg was permanently gone setting in. She had one small seizure but it didn't recur and she is off Tramadol now. Her biggest challenge is still going to the bathroom and she doesn't want my help to balance her. Next week I go back to work so have to figure out a plan for her care during the day.

Yeay Brandy! Well, the depression is usually a result of the meds. They're not exactly something we are used to, and they affect us in weird ways. Try to remember, dogs don't regret about things lost. We live in the now, and for Brandy, the now might be a bit of a challenge, which may make her seem depressed, but she'll come through, you'll see.

Once more, Jerry has "hit the nail on the head".  Too often, we put the emotion of depression on our companions, and it really is only reactions to not feeling "normal", and believe me these chemicals can take them out of their "normal".  It will return once all the chemicals are gone from the system.  The biggest difference between my QuadPawd Cherry and my TriPawd Cherry is the fact that she is not as stealthy when she attempt to get into mischief.  The hopping creates much more noise and she cannot sneek into things as easily.  She also sometimes forgets when there is a squirl that needs chasing and she hops down from the couch.  However, that has never really set her back for more than seconds.  I am sure the same will be true for Brandy.

Keep up the great work.
