So y’all have been more than helpful and supportive for my journey with Belvidere and his front leg amputation. Just got biopsy results back and will learn more on Sat. when Bel gets his stitches out. There was a mass on his front leg and a lesion on the bone there. His abdominal ultrasound did not show any other tumors. Vet says no way to know if it has metastisized. If it has and if we do chemo, that would extend life by about 6 months. 5 treatments every 3 weeks. He says about 50% of dogs have it metastisized. Thinking of not doing chemo and trying an organic raw diet. Found on caninecancer.com let’s hear your thoughts and experiences. TIA!

Our dog, Murphy, was diagnosed with lymphangiosarcoma. It's so rare they have very little idea how to treat it. We've decided to go with chemo. He gets his 3rd doxorubicin tomorrow. After that they rescan him. If there's no improvement we stop at that point. If there is improvement he has 2 more doses. It's tough making decisions like this but you'll know what's best for your Belvidere.

Our dog Howard was diagnosed in July from primary hemangiosarcoma of the bone. Sorry that you are part of this lonely club. He is having a metronomic chemo protocol and still seems to not know he is sick. It did unfortunately spread to his spleen before we were able to start chemo, which we had removed. I recommend the turkey tail mushroom supplement it is supposed to help a lot and was recommended by our oncologist

Chemo is such a personal  decision and there TRULY is no right  or wrong way when it comes to that.

It's  such a crap shoot.  Some dogs have done chemo and seemingly have gotten good extended  time.  Some dogs jave done chemo and didn't  even get tnrough all the treatments  before tragedy struck.

Some dogs have done no chemo and are currently celebrating two and three years and going strong.  Some dogs did no chemo and only got short extended time.

Statistics are "guidelines" that just cannot take the individual  dog, lifestyle, environment, etc, into account.

No matter if you do chemo or not, I think incorporating other "therapies"...good  nutrition...good supplements ...mushroom  supplements....turkey tail....etc, etc.

It comes down to what you are most comfortable with.  You know your pup better than anyone.  Does he mind carride, Vet trips, etc, or do they stress him out?  Which path resonates best with you in a way that you won't  second guess down the road.  Although, on this crazy journey, we second guess everything .....so scratch  that suggestion!😉

As far as raw diet, I'm  zero help.  Some swear by it, some don't.  There is so much convicting indormation.    Do some searches here on raw diet.   Many, many blogs and thread have been written.

Keep is posted.  We are all cheering for Belvidere!  He's  not going anywhere anytime soon!  He's  having  too much fun being so spoiled and living life to the fullest😎😎

Well first of all a big CONGRATS for making it to stitches-out day! That's wonderful! How is Belvedere doing otherwise?

When it comes to chemo, there are no right or wrong choices. You do what's best for you and Belvedere, that's the only right one. Do what will make you both happy and feel like he is living a good life. If he enjoys seeing the vet, and the oncology bills won't stress you out, then do it. But if vet visits are dreadful to him, and you don't have the cash for chemo, then that stress is not helpful to either of you. Weigh those pros and cons, and then clear your mind and sit down to have a heart to heart with him. Ask him what he wants to do. Seriously! You may be surprised at what he tells you.

When it comes to other ways to fight cancer, there are many other ways as you've discovered. Most of these methods are not grounded in research studies, but if it makes you feel better that you are doing something, and he enjoys the changes in his food, then it can't hurt right? As long as you keep an open eye out for snake oil 'cures' and such, you'll do right by him.

But please do work with a holistic vet before trying anything like a complete diet change. I wish we had done that for Jerry. Instead we went through a lot of guess work with diet and supplements and could have put him at risk for any number of issues related to an unbalanced diet. He did fine but I think we got lucky. These days there are so many holistic vets who can help you treat cancer with other means, like Dr. Loops, so really there's no good reason not to at least talk to one to get a good basic education of what can help Belvedere.

One more thing: chemo is not a guarantee for any length of time. We've seen it go both ways, so if you opt into chemo, know that it doesn't come with any kind of assured survival rate.

I hope this helps! Please keep us posted on how Saturday goes. We are excited for you guys to take the next step!

Thanks for all the insight. Belvidere is and has never been the normal dog. We have a long list of crazy illnesses, snake bites, injuries, antics, etc. His cancer started in the bone and moved through it to also form a tumor on the outside of the bone. I’ve decided against chemo and will add a few supplements....slowly. This dog was so happy to get his stitches out and the cone removed, it was crazy! In the exam room, he pushed as far into my lap as he could get and just wanted loved on. Very out of character for him! When we left, he literally dragged me to the woods and practically down a kudzu covered hill. He navigated the kudzu vines like a champ. Nice to see him feeling so good. Going to let him be a dog and hope for the best. Just going to take it one day at a time! Today was a good day! Thanks everyone!

Yes, letting Belvidere be Belvidere  is what it's  all about!!!   There's  something  so freeing about developing  a plan forward that enhances who Belvidere  is, rather than inhibiting  who he is!  And he's  certain made it plain he's not a fan of Bet visits

I'm so bad at doing "searches", but I know we have plenty  of input from members who have gone the "alternative " route  with nutrition,  supplements,  complimentary  therapies, etc.  Some of rhe posts were quite thorough  in the stuff they did...the whys...the doses...etc.

So happy to hear how full of joy Belvidere  is!  Cheering for that sweet boy!!

Hi Belvidere and family 🐾🌷

I agree with others, chemo is no guarantee of a good outcome.

I did it with my baby Eurydice but will never know if that bought her more time or not ...

You have a great attitude and understood what is really important in life, I am sure Belvidere and you will have tons of fun and will enjoy life to the full 🎈🎈for a looooooooong time!

Sending you a big hug and tons of cuddles to your cutie pie 😘🐮💫✨🌟🌹

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)
