our dog Howard just had his second dose of cytoxan Saturday and is due for his next one tomorrow. He started with very bad liquid diarrhea rightj before the dose was given. I started 500mg of metronidazole twice a day abd fortiflora. Also fed him hamburger and rice teh whole day. His stool firmed up a bit so I mixed in some regulat kibble abd now its liquid again. He is actikg fine and not having accidenta or frequent bms. Just when he goes, its liquid. Any advice to help him. Im waiting to here from his oncologist as we speak.
So sorry his belly does not feel good. You were right on track with rice and ground beef. I would boil up some more, make sure it is a long grain rice, not instant. The starch in the long grain rices are better. You can also use boneless, skinless, or ground chicken. Boil the meat and rice in a pan with extra water until tender. Sometimes it helps to give nothing by mouth for a little while, then start with a few tablespoons of the meat/rice mixture several times throughout the day as opposed to one larger bowl. You can keep him on this diet for a couple of days and when the stool is firm very slowly start incorporating a small amount of reg food at a time.
It sounds like you did everything right, but if you rush back too quickly with the normal food it can start right back over again. Your vet may also prescribe Hills I/D prescription diet which is very similar to the home made version. I never understood why you had to get it through a vet, but it works well also.
Good luck and hoping for happier tummies soon!

Oh poor Howard. Let us know what the oncologist says, I'm guessing they may prescribe Cerenia for his GI tract for this situation and as a preventive later on.
In the meantime here are some diarrhea suggestions from the Tripawds Nutrition blog :

Also keep in mind that there are two schools of thought when it comes to curing the runs. One says, eat nothing at all for 24 hours, the other says eat a bland diet for 48 hours of chicken and rice (the beef may have been too rich along with the kibble). Sounds like Howard may do better by fasting, but do talk to your vet and get their opinion.
