Riley has been recovering well walking great eating well and everything looking up.

He is currently only on Metacam only which he seemed to be tolerating well.  Then last night he became wobbly on his feet would not eat his dinner and has been panting heavily. He has been walking the stairs fine but last night we had to carry him out where he peed and had a small amount of diarrhea.  We can get him to drink water if we bring it to him but he doesn't want to walk or doing anything else.

We are going to take him into the vet in the morning but wanted to get some feed back from you all.  Do you think it could be a side effect of the Metacam?  Have any of you had the same issues that came about from other causes?

Thanks for the input,

Riley's pawrents.

What a worry. Sorry to hear Riley's not feeling very well. I don't have any advice at all; just wanted to send good wishes and good luck at the vet.

When Chloe came home (after being on the super powerful pain meds with the IV drip) she would sway from side to side and sometimes lose her balance. Then when she was on Tramadol she drooled more than normal… The only thing on our paperwork said that was known to possibly have negative side effects like yours were the antibiotics. Chloe didn't have any adverse reactions, but the Simplef antibiotics says that it can cause upset stomach (vomiting, diarrhea, decrease in appetite), but that administering the drug with a meal may help alleviate these symptoms.

Best for you to see a vet (which you are already set to do) since it may or may not be the antibiotics…

Chloe became a rear amp tripawd on 7-29-10. Another tumor was removed on front leg 2-20-14. Found 3rd tumor on neck 2-2015, but she's still kicking cancer's butt at age 14. Chloe's blog

Chloe's Mom is right; drooling can be a side effect, and so can diarrhea. But anything is possible right now, you are doing the right thing by going to the vet. Let us know what happens OK? We hope he's back on the mend by the time you get home.

How long ago was Riley's amp? Panting heavily can be a sign of pain. Also panting can be a side effect of Tramadol. I haven't heard it being a side effect of Metacam tho. Loss of appetite can be associated with pain or being on the meds.

The biggest issue post-amp is getting the right mixture of meds in the dog. I didn't use Tramadol after the first few days due to panting & some other side effects but found Gabapentin very helpful. (300mg 3x's day) Perhaps you could ask you vet about it?

I also kept Zak pretty out of it on purpose that first week. I wanted him to get the required rest so when he was coming 'out of it' I'd help him out to pee. then I'd pretty much knock him out again.

Everyone has their own approach but IMO this was a major surgery & he needed to rest up to heal properly. I would do exactly the same thing again.

Hope things get back on track soon.. 🙂
