Yea, he making a pretty good mess. But we will just keep cleaning and following him around with a towel. I did go ahead and call the vet this morning. He apparently left a small hole in the bottom of the incision at the lowest point to allow for draining. That would have been nice to know. I went ahead and used the peroxide and some surgical wipes to clean it. Well Im at work right now hopefully the house doesnt look like a murder scene.Laughing

Hello and welcome.  I put a t-shirt on Cemil, with several layers of paper towel underneath to soak up the drips.  It worked pretty well.  If you gather it up in the middle of the back and use a rubber band to make a sort of "pony-tail", it's neater.  Looking back at your post, I don't see which leg it was.  Obviously, this would only work on a front leg amputation.  The vet also advised me to use a warm compress frequently to keep the opening clear.  If it starts to clog up or scab over, it won't drain.  With Cemil, I think it continued to drain for about 2.5 weeks, pink-red.

Hang in there Puppy--the first couple weeks are full of adjustments, but then you settle into a regular routine pretty much like the one you had before, and  your people get used the "hop-along" gait so they can think about normal things again.

It was a right rear amputation. Its just kindof nerveracking to see and with both of his pawrent having to work it makes it pretty tough. Thank you all for your responses and ideas. Hope everyone is well today.

I'd love to see a photo of a Basset/Rottweiler mix!

Cooper's ortho surgeon left a drain in...and it was kind of ooky for about a week. I put old sheets and towels on his dog bed. I also noticed that after many weeks of refusing to lay on his left side because - I assume - it was very painful, he was comfortable enough to lay on it right after the amputation (left front leg.) I actually took that as a good sign.

Cherry's Dad Here,

First and formost, please do not question your decision for the treatment. You know "Puppy" better than anyone else, and you more than appear to have nothing but the best love and affection possible. It is normal to ask youself why I chose this path. We all do and it is only normal. For us, this was the only path which had any hope of allowing Cherry to have the quality of life and the zeal for life that had so defined her eleven years. All other choices would have forced her into a painful existance for my selfish needs. Thus, you have given "Puppy" the best chance for a full remaining life.

For us the chemotherapy was far worse than the amputation. The first treatment was literally hours after surgery and it was #### for all of us for the duration (about 10 weeks). However, there was light at the end of that journey. Even our breeder was pleased to see her recovery as Cherry explored every inch of the breeders Living Room. My point is to make sure that you treat the spirit as well as the body. For Cherry, she really looks forward to our nearly daily trips in the truck. In fact it was during these trips that she first started to eat on her own. You can read about our journey on my journal

We are all pulling for you and will help celebrate any and all successes - and there will be many of those. Keep your spirits up and that will help keep "Puppy's" spirits up.

Bob

Thanks for posting the pic….I work in I.T. you would think I could figure out how to do that. Yea he his a cutie, hes the most gentle and laid back dog Ive ever had. He was dumped in the back yard 11 years ago with a 120 pound German Shepherd. That day he bacame a truly blessed dog, and we became blessed to have him.
