Clyde went to the vet for a checkup and his last melanoma vaccine last week...the doctor is really pleased with how he is doing.  He thinks that the tumor has continued to shrink a little bit, and the brave guy is still not really showing any symptoms, so life is good for him!  The doctor is recommending doing another vaccine in six months (of course, I immediately said "Do you really think he'll be alive in 6 months?"  The doc said he has no reason to think otherwise and again reassured me that he thinks Clyde looks great...of course he then joked that he wouldn't blame me if I didn't believe anything he said since nothing he has said to this point has really panned out.  I guess we just have to have some sense of humor about this to keep from going crazy...).

Although there isn't a lot of evidence for its usefulness with melanoma, we are going to go ahead and try metronomic chemo.  Since Clyde doesn't feel sick at this point, we want to make really sure that he doesn't feel any side effects - if there is anything at all that compromises his quality of life, we will stop right away.  Despite the lack of lots of scientific data on it, the vet thinks it could very well help a little bit.  He assured us that we didn't have to do it - that we had pretty much exhausted the standard protocol so we should feel fine about doing nothing else.  However, my decision was based on the fact that if I could have even one more quality hour (or even 5 minutes!  anything!) with Holly, I would have done anything to make that possible.  Being so aware of that right now made me feel like if this has a chance of helping at all, I want to try it.

Unfortunately, I didn't do quite as well at this appointment as I did at the last...I pretty much cried the whole way through.  To be honest, every time he said something positive, I seemed to get worse.  I just kept thinking about how badly I had wanted to have this conversation about Holly.  I wanted her chemo to be done and to hear how well she was doing.  I researched metronomic chemo a few months ago - but all in the context of Holly.  I thought that we would eventually be discussing if we should do it with her.  It just breaks my heart that we didn't get to celebrate more ampuversaries and good vet appointments and all of that happy stuff.  So yeah...1 step forward, 3 steps back.

Right now, we're on a trip that was originally supposed to be Holly's trip - on the day she was diagnosed, we promised her that we would take her on a vacation.  It was supposed to be all about spending some good quality time with her.  Back in April, August seemed so far away...but still well within the amount of time that we thought she would survive, so we truly believed we would have this time to spoil her and just generally have a great summer with lots of great memories to cherish.  Now it's a spoil Clyde/honor Holly trip, but I am definitely feeling her loss particularly strongly right now.  When we get back, it's back to the vet for us...we wanted to wait to start Clyde on the chemo until after our trip so that we wouldn't be in the middle of nowhere if there are any problems and to make sure that he can just enjoy himself and feel good this week.

I thought I was actually going to manage a short update this time, but obviously that's impossible for me! blush As always, thank goodness for Tripawds - it helps so much just to let all of this out and know that there are people here who will understand.

I am so glad to hear that Clyde is doing well!  I know what you mean about wanting to try everything you can.  We were very fortunate that we were able time-wise and financially to exhaust all options.  There is a lot of peace that comes with that.  I hope everything works out great for you!

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

What a good update for Clyde and your pack. You don't have to worry about long updates, there are no word limits on the Forums! At least that I know of. And we're here to cheer you on, so update away. I hope this vacation does all of you a lot of good, and you're feeling Holly's presence in a big way.

You have a great, forward-thinking vet, that is such a huge benefit. I know it's hard not to think of Holly every time you discuss treatment options for Clyde, I would too. But at least now, one of your packmates has a fighting chance at kicking cancer's butt on behalf of all of you. Yay for Clyde! Yay for your courage in getting through this rough patch, and honoring Holly's memory by staying strong for your boy. Keep it up and enjoy your time off. When you get back, we'll be here to help with whatever comes next.

I am so pleased to hear this positive update on Clyde.  That the tumor is shrinking is fantastic.  I think your vet sounds fantastic too.  I know how tough it is to have lost Holly; there is never enough time.  While it doesn't make logical  sense, maybe Holly being on the short end of the spectrum means that Clyde will blow away the odds on the other end.  I hope so anyway.  I like the idea of honoring Holly and spoiling Clyde on your vacation-- try to enjoy yourself and take enjoyment in Clyde's living and thriving.

Scout: January 31, 2002 to November 7, 2011

Scout's diagnosis was "poorly differentiated sarcoma"; amputation 1/11/2011.  Scout enjoyed 9 fantastic years on 4 legs and 9 glorious months on 3 legs.  If love alone could have saved you…

I am so glad to hear that Clyde continues to kick cancer's butt. That's awesome.

They say all the firsts are the hardest and I guess this is your first holiday without Holly. And yet it is a holiday where you had planned to have her with you.  That has to be hard.  I know it can't be easy but try to "Be More Dog " and give Clyde the best holiday of his life.  He must also be missing Holly and feeling your sadness.

We are always here for you.

Lots of hugs

Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. I'm glad to hear Clyde is doing so well.

It must be hard to be on the trip without Holly, but hopefully you can focus on all the good times she brought to your life. She wouldn't want you to be sad! Hope the Spoiling Clyde/Honoring Holly trip is one of the best trips ever.

Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman.
