Onyx is doing really well, eating and drinking. She's gotten back on pretty much the sail potty schedule she was on before her amp. But only pee. She hasn't pooped yet. Her surgery was Monday. I know the pain meds can cause constipation. But how long is to long? She's eating but not a lot. A few bites here and there. She's drinking but also, not a whole lot. How many days is it okay for her to not poop? I know it can get painful.

I know it seems like a long time.  If I remember correct it took Sassy about 3 or 4 days.  I think it was closer to 4 days before she finally went.  All the meds will mess with their systems.  I know others it took longer.  Just breathe deep she will go when she needs to.  What is not a lot of eating?  I mean make sure she is getting enough with the pain meds otherwise it will mess with her tummy.

When we got home monday morning i put 4 cups of her kibble in her bowl. She's still got some of that left. Today I bought a few can of wet food to try and get her to eat a little more. She ate almost half a can mixed with some dry. There's a bit left in the bowl. Every time she comes in from going potty she gets a few bites. She's a Doberman, but shes small. Never was a big eater. And I've given her a few other snacks. I gave her a pig skin chew earlier and she ate it up. I don't think her appetite will be back to normal until she's healed and running around again. Since all this started with her leg she lost 10 lbs :( she doesn't eat good when she's not active. I just don't want her to have any more discomfort that shes already in from the surgery. Just curious how long it took everyone else to go :)

Some dogs take several days but you can help move things along by adding things like olive oil, a bit of metamucil or pumpkin pulp to her food. If you're really concerned call your vet and they can give you a stool softener.

Sally it was my Jersey Girl that didn't go until day 7, and then not again for 3 days after that.  I don't know if she was constipated or if she just didn't want to get up because she was weaker than most after surgery.  When she had her TPLO last year she didn't come out of her crate to potty of any kind for 50 HOURS!  And Jersey Girl has always been like clock work - two poops a day for every one of her 9 years.

Somewhere at some point on my doggie parenting journey, I read that dogs have the ability to hold pee and poo for days. Apparently it has something to do with hiding their scent from wild creatures trying to hunt them down and eat them.  Yikes.  While that's an interesting survival too, I'm glad they're domesticated now!
