Fuzz had his surgical consultation today with the most amazing specialist Dr. Padgett today.  Dr. Padgett specializes in cancer surgeries/amputations.  His exam takes place sitting on the floor  where he stayed the entire 40 minute appointment and playing with Fuzz and letting Fuzz do his thing which was very Fuzz like ( roaming around, flopping on everyone's lap, rubbing and purring loudly and displaying that even with his  bum cancer leg he can leap from the floor to the high counter in a single bound sniff around and then jump back down.  He was very knowledgeable and positive about Fuzz's amputation and outcome.  I was so much at ease after meeting my mind was made up and we scheduled the surgery for 9/20/19.  He assured me that he has handled many cases like Fuzz (complete cancer destruction of scapula) and Fuzz was ideal, healthy, active, happy cat for this type of surgery.  Of course in the back of my mind I still have the fear of him being depressed and not coming out of the surgery/amputation well and regressing or being super depressed/inactive or this cancer being micropscopic and having spread and comes back.  The post operative ICU care he will get for almost 24 hours and then come home is pretty thorough. I will bring him home the day after surgery. They ensure pain management is handled adequately and Fuzz will be sent home with a multi day transdermal pain patch, gabapentin (which they have him on now .5- 1 ml per day), steroid/anti-inflammatory medications and to keep him confined and quiet for a few days then start increasing exercise as tolerable with a return for staples to be removed in approx 2 weeks post surgery.  No dietary restrictions were noted.  I am only wondering about litter as I forgot to ask recommended type.. I plan on keeping him confined in my laundry room and even have left over potty pads to cover floor just in case from my lab that passed in April.    I am wondering what special prep advice does everyone have leading up to the surgery?  I know he is getting extra love and all the special food he wants!   My laundry room has only a couple small areas I need to plug up so he can't get in between/behind washer and dryer and block of counter from him trying to jump up. Other than that it is hard wood floor with rugs and fairly small but has room for him to walk around if/when he wants to. I have a cat bed but he likes blankets and his special box he sleeps in.  Pre surgery suggestions/advice?  And of course we as for your love, prayers and positive healing energy as Fuzz goes in for his procedure next Friday!

I'm so happy Fuzz saw such a great specialist.

I tried Yesterday's News for Mona's litter box. It was a disaster. Frankly, the whole litter box was a disaster for her because I cut out the front so she could easily walk in. She chose to balance on 3 legs on the lip of the litter box. She would not use it properly until I retrieved the old used litter from the garbage for her. Other tripawd cats did better with their litter box than Mona.

I would suggest having a den for her in the room. Mona slept in a closet under a shelf. Some people put a blanket over a table and the cat slept under the table. Even a cage/crate or a large cardboard box, all covered with towels or blankets will give Fuzz a cozy den.

My vet sent Mona home with canned kitten food. Mona loved it and the advantage was that it's full of moisture. This is the time to let Fuzz eat whatever he likes.

I suggest drawing up a schedule for the medications and to stagger them. If the dosage is 3-4 times a day go with 4 times. It's best to catch the pain before it starts up again.

For more info on prep and advice, you can either go to the cat forums at https://tripawd.....gged-cats/ or better yet here's a book on cat tripawds: https://downloa.....-cat-tips/

You say Fuzz is a happy cat and he'll be happy after surgery. He'll sleep a lot initially, take some steps and likely flop around. Mona would fool me by flopping around and then suddenly escape the room and race around the house and up the stairs and fall over exhausted. Watch out for that! I think the medication made her a bit wacky. Give Fuzz lots of cuddle time and as he becomes more alert you might want to stimulate him with playtime or hold him to look out a window.

You've done lots of research. Also ensure you take care of yourself with company, good food, some treats and sleep when you can.

Don't you just love great vets like that? They just put your mind at ease and the patient's too! Dr. Padgett sounds great. He wouldn't happen to be with Metropolitan Veterinary would he? Just curious.

I'll let cat parents talk about the kitty litter 'cause they're the experts. In addition to our e-books be sure to check out the Tripawds What to Expect posts for tips that will put your mind at ease, as well as Jerry's Required Reading List

We'll keep sending pawsitivity your way! Ask as many questions as you'd like.

Yes, as a matter of fact Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital in Copley,Ohio is where I have been going.. first with Dr. Gamblin for oncology and now Dr. Padgett will be Fuzz's surgeon..  I also called in today and Dr. Padgett actually said just use whatever litter I am using now.. that was my biggest concern was litter box... but I have a low box to use and also many left over pee pads from my dog that I will put down on his confined area aka my laundry room.  I made a big order of all kinds of special wet food, broths, treats, raw food and even kitten food from chewy today to have a wide variety of food/moist food to get him eating and taking his medications.. Fuzz will now only take meds mixed in food so hopefully his appetite comes back fairly quick after surgery and I can get him to eat some of the buffet I have coming along with all his meds. I have requested an extra day off from work so when he comes home Saturday I will have Sunday and Monday of that week devoted to him as well.. of course I will adjust as needed if more time is required when he comes home.  I wish I could manage all week off, but don't think that will be possible.. I will have my father around to help the couple days I do have to work that week.  I am starting to read and gather all my surgery prep/post op info...

Yay for the vet clinic! You made such a great choice; they are an AAHA-accredited clinic, which guarantees Fuzz will receive the most current treatment protocols for animals, and continue getting great care from the vets and staff alike.

Sounds like you are getting everything together to help you and Fuzz have a great recovery. A word of caution with the food and pills though: many pets become picky about combining meals with pills, so you may want to start disguising the pills is treat-like food, and keeping his main meals separate so that he will be more likely to eat later on. Just a thought.

That should be plenty of time for you to care for him after surgery. Your father helping out is wonderful too! It takes a village!
