Hi there! My 10 year old cattle dog, Nix, is getting her front leg amputated due to osteosarcoma on Friday. This site has been so helpful. I’m curious about transporting her home after surgery. My vet is not an overnight clinic- and honestly I feel better about her coming home. I’m concerned about the logistics of this. She is 60 lbs, and difficult to lift. Also- I feel that lifting her will irritate the incision site. The other option is helping her up the ramp into and out of my car. Is this something she will be able to do? How can we best support her? Very anxious over here.

Hi Emily and Nix, welcome. We are so sorry for the diagnosis, but you've come to the right place for support.

Yes absolutely bring her home that night. You do not want her left unattended. It won't be the easiest thing, and she will probably be pretty out of it, but better than leaving her alone. Good move!

It would be helpful to have someone with you to get her into and out of your car. A DIY grocery bag sling can help too. The incision will be tender but nothing you can't handle as far as lifting her.

Is she used to a ramp? If not, she may not even use one (most dogs won't) so I wouldn't buy one just yet. The best thing you can do is have a friend who can help you lift one end and you lift the other.
