Great appetite, slept most of the day and let me pick her up to go outside twice this evening. She's got ZERO interest in walking, but I'm ok with that right now. 🙂

I'm glad she rested all day because she can be a spaz. Only came to life when I started cooking dinner, then the head was off the pillow and she was sniffing the air like a mad fool! So darn cute!!

I'm hoping that I can get her to fully relieve herself outside before bedtime so I don't have to clean up in the middle of the night again. Fortunately, I put housebreaking pads on her bed so it wasn't a big deal.

But really, I think she's doing great. I wish I could post a pic but I can't figure it out ... she is a bit swollen but looking good!

Thanks for asking about her! 🙂

Sounds like you are both doing well adjusting to Tripawd life....good job! It's great that she's eating, my Dobe Nitro wouldn't eat for a week after surgery so I had that added stress to worry about. Celebrate every milestone, no matter how small it seems....they all add up to a beautiful life with your pup. Keep us posted.

Here is a post on how to add photos to the forums. Let me know if you'd like help O?

Well, she soiled her bed the first night so technically, she has gone potty since surgery. Since then, she'll only pee when we take her out. Not sure if that's because of the reduced food intake the day of and after surgery or because we are hovering to make sure she doesn't fall so she's not comfortable doing her thing. Given that she hopped out of her "crib" last night and into the hallway - YIKES! - I think it's more that she hasn't mastered the crouch/squat balance thing.

She is not active at all yet, unless I'm trying to sleep, and I am a little concerned about muscle atrophy and weakness. She's almost 12 and lost a lot of weight in the past few months, all of it muscle. I do think her paws may also be sore as they clipped her nails and several were cut below the quick and that may be contributing to the lack of desire to stand. Overall, I'm not disappointed though ... I was afraid she'd need to be sedated for days ... but so far, she just gets restless at night.

All in all, she's doing well 🙂

First.......I'm SO glad she's doing ok.  I was feeling so bad for you as I could feel the fear and I know that fear.  As for the donation.......I'm not surprised but I am so thankful for you.  I watch the news sometimes and think that all we hear about is the rottenness of humanity.  I wish they would televise more about the good that is out there and happening every day.  Seems no one wants to hear about that.  I see the good in people every single day and I am so glad you got some help.  You deserve it.  I think she will continually improve and tell you what she can and can't do.  If she's eating that is SUCH a good sign.  And maybe her paws are a little sore.  I'm sure you have a lovely vet but the office staff sounds like they could use some training.  If you weren't so far I'd say come to my vet and I'll donate as well.  The vet and the office staff can make such a difference as you go through this scary process.  I would be happy to hold your hand at any time if you're scared, need information or advice or just an ear.  You're doing great, you're doing everything right.  Hang in there and know that you have prayers and support here.

xoxo

Thank you so much, Debbie!

I'm here to tell you, this dog is going to give me a heart attack! She hopped out of the crib and went over to her "real" bed while we were eating dinner tonight. I took one look at my fiancé and said, "We've GOT to put the carpets down!" (I bought 75 ft of runner since our first floor is all wood/tile)

Not 30 minutes later, she gets up and FOLLOWS THE CARPET TO THE KITCHEN. What?! Gets a drink and FOLLOWS THE CARPET back to bed. Holy cow! Got up again and tried to run upstairs (her furless 12 year old brother had gone to bed and she always starts the night in his room". YIKES! We stopped her a third of the way so she could go outside and carried her up. We put her in the hallway and let her choose which room/which bed and she hopped into her brother's room an curled right up.

She's amazing but I will feel SO much better once that skin heals up. 🙂

LOL please, no coronary infarctions!  I know that OMG what are you DOING feeling too.  It just means that they are getting back to business as usual.  Less than a week after surgery Patches hopped into a low bed to snuggle in.  I had to help her in.  What I didn't expect was to have her jump up and decide it was time to get out.  I broke the impact but she still cried.  After that it was baby gates and barriers because she too wanted to go up the steps and wander around.  We have hard wood floors too so we have runners, carpets and yoga mats to help her get more traction .  And she uses them too!  They seem to get that it's there for their assistance.  They are so smart aren't they?  If she's eating and drinking and sleeping with her brother I'd say she's doing good, wants to be her old self.

This Thursday will be a month post amputation, today is a full week post the first chemo treatment and while I'm not worry free I'd say I'm feeling more secure in knowing how to care for her and read her to tell what she needs or wants or needs but doesn't want (like her canine gold antioxidant drops).  You sound like me......we hover but STILL miss the quick moves that she makes that make us wonder how the heck she got past our super radar.  You're doing great, heart attack risk and all.  It's scary, no doubt about it, but as I see Patches running, eating, smiling and enjoying lying in the grass in the sun, I know I did the right thing and I know you did too.  Patches has no more pain and she is joyous about life again.  And man......you should see her run when she gets excited.  Sometimes it's to me because she's happy to see me and sometimes it's away from me to something tempting and I have to run to catch up.

I promise you this......she's doing good, you're doing good and it just keeps getting better.  Maybe not easier but better in that they are comfortable and happy and we are getting the hang of caring for them.  And PLEASE feel free to reach out if you have any urgent moments where you need a hand hold.  I'm here.

xoxo, have a good day

Yeah, "soiling her bed" counts as poop around here. So....YAAAAAAAAAY FOR POOP!!!!clap

I love that Izzy likes her carpet runners. She was just waiting for you to "roll out the red carpet" for the Queen!

It just amazes me how quickly xogs DEMAND they get back to their regular routine! It's so cathartic for everybody.

Once the fur starts growing back in, you won't even notice the incision anymore. I remember that shocked me as much as anything, seeing how large the area was they shaved. I think someone vot a little too razor happy!

You are doing a GREAT job! Relax and enjoy the gift of each day. And take...and post...lots of pictures!!

Thanks for the update and we look forward ro more!

Hugs to all!

Izzy is doing so great! I put a shirt on her because her furless brother is bothered by the incision. Today, she spent the day chasing sunshine and letting me know it was time to move her bed so she could keep laying in it. Again tonight when she heard me making dinner, she hopped along the carpet runner to the kitchen, hoping for a treat. She loves cauliflower so I gave her some (that's what I was prepping when she wandered out). She gets tired relatively fast but hopping is different than walking, and I kept her on strict rest for the first two days. She's now 4 days out from surgery and it's almost like nothing happened.

I've tried to embed photos but it sure doesn't work for me. I don't use photobucket but know how to embed via html code, it just isn't happening. Also is tough to actually post the updates - I often have to leave the page and start all over again 2 or 3 times. Maybe it's my browser? All I know is I would've posted TONS of photos of my superpup! Will still try big-grin

Well...Imw ZERO help when it comes to anything computer. The computer geeks will show up shortly though, so hang in there!

To hear Izzy is doing so well, and it's only day four...WOW!! You are rockin' this recovery Miss Izzy! Can't wait to see the video of her hopping down the carpet trail to check out what's cooking.

Now sometimes...not all the time...but sometimes there may be a little bit of a crash about now. Just mentioning that so IF she has a down day, it won't be scary. I really dobut Izzy will entertain having a "down" day though! She's quite the ROCK STARclap

Cauliflower for dessert tonight for everyone!

PS...The only thing I can add "computer wise" is I've heart the techies mention that the Chrome Browser isn't quite as good onnthis site as the Firefox. I have Firefox, which crashes all the time, so I don't know if that would be beneficial or not.

Glad to hear Izzy is doing good! I'm with the furless brother....I didn't want to see the incision either, so Nitro wore a t-shirt for quite awhile. He was so cute in them I almost didnt want him to stop wearing them! Sally is right about the possible "crash"; it's normal, but can still be scary. With us, it was one hop forward, two hops back for a bit. I'm not much help with the picture thing either, but someone will throw you a line on this. Big hugs to Izzy!

Thanks for the fair warning on the possible crash. Fortunately, I can stay home with her all week ... I retired from teaching last year and now work in sales so, as the big boss says, "It's just software".

I tried to add photos after making a photobucket account and it said I "don't have permission" ... Poo.

Glad to hear Izzy is adjusting well. My 12 year old (at the time of surgery) beagle Kasey, had her front right leg amputated a year and a half ago. She stayed overnight, but when I brought her home the next day I put her on the living room floor, took my glass of water upstairs, was going back downstairs to get her and there she was slowly hopping up the stairs. I almost died! I rushed to her and carried her the rest of the way. She looked at me like I was crazy. I have three dogs total and one of the the three (Pebbles) did not like it when Kasey had her stitches. Pebbles would try to chew them when I was not home. So not only did Kasey get to wear the cone, but a shirt as well.

Hope things continue to go well for you and Izzy!

It sounds like she's doing so good!  I am SO happy to hear that.  Those first few days are scary as hell and I slept with and near Patches the entire time.  Tomorrow she will be a month post amputation and while we still hover it's more to make sure she's safe and not doing anything she shouldn't do.  Like go up the stairs.......I caught her trying to get around the baby gate .  They will have their tired days but overall they just forget the whole ordeal.

One thing though that my neighbor told me (four dogs, anesthesiologist, smarty pants and we love her) is that they might get phantom limb sensations and that gently rubbing around her incision and applying gentle pressure with the palm of my hand may help with that.  I don't know if it helped but it must have felt good because she got that "do not stop" look in her eyes and then she'd fall asleep.  And every now and then she'll be sleeping and suddenly jump up like a crab or flea bit her.  She looks confused and then looks at me and I go over and rub the area and she seems to settle down.

And her fur has pretty much grown back enough to cover the unpleasantness so she looks rather normal.  Her brother didn't mind the stitches but I did notice he was kinder and stopped knocking her out of the way to get to me first.  Dogs are so funny.  And adorable.

I can't wait to see the pictures.  I hope you guys have another good day.

xoxo
