brownie is post op day 12. Pretty much since the surgery there was an area that was a discolored area at his incision site. One day the area around it started looking pinker and the area deepened in color. Over the past couple of days it has progressed to black. I told the dr and he said is was likely "not viable tissue" which in other words is necrotic. There seems to be discoloration near this area that I'm freakkng out will also necrose. It is sunday and the dr said he will remove the tissue on Tuesday when we do chemo. I feel like it needs to be done asap. Has anyone else ever had a wound site necrose and what was the outcome?

I don't know anything about necrosis but I do know if your gut feeling isn't waiting until Tuesday for Brownie to be seen is best then insist on him being seen sooner.  Hopefully someone with experience with this will pop in soon but if not go with what you feel is right for Brownie.  I'd rather error on the side of caution than be wrong later.  We have all spent many dollars in this journey and need to make sure we're getting the care we're entitled to.  Peace of mind is a priceless thing.

It's not common but we've had it happen here with other members, just search for "necrotic" and you'll come up with tons of results.

If the area is hot to the touch, leaking, oozing or smelling I would get in before Tuesday. I know Brownie is getting good care but if you are uncomfortable with waiting that long, then don't.

You probably know this stuff already but here's a post about MRSA :

Ty's skin turned black and had died. It was also oozing. He had a fever. Can you check her temp. I would not wait till Tuesday. I would DEMAND a culture. Also, if there is any question of infection, I would delay chemo. I am not trying to be scary, just trying to use Ty's journey to help someone else. I was told to wait and the area kept growing. This resulted in a lot more invasive treatment than if they would have cultured the wound at the beginning when I first asked them to. He was eventually diagnosed with MRSA . Lori, Ty & gang

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

If you're worried, listen to your heart. Better safe than sorry. Don't worry about the vet thinking you're over-reacting. He's had major major surgery and the vet should understand your concerns.

Denise, Bill and Angel Ellie.

Active 10+ Pyr mix suddenly came up lame with ACL tear in left rear leg. Scheduled for a TPLO but final pre-op x-rays indicated a small suspicious area, possibly OSA, which could have caused the ACL tear. Surgeon opened the knee for TPLO but found soft bone. Biopsy came back positive for OSA. Became a Tripawd 9/18/14. Carbo6 with Cerenia and Fluids. Pain free and living in the moment. Crossed the Bridge on 7/12/15 after probable spread of cancer to her cervical spine. A whole lifetime of memories squeezed into 10 months. Here's her story: Eloise

Update: got him into the vet first thing morning after talking to the Dr Sunday morning about the necrosis.  The Dr thought the wound looked good this morning, other than that area of necrosis. No signs of infection whatsoever, and he's eating and drinking well. He decided to not dentist it as the necrosis is so superficial. He thinks the top layer will slough off and that will be it, and it will heal well. I'm just supposed to do warm compressed, massage, and neosporin. Chemo delayed to Friday which is a bummer, he is just being conservative. Thanks everyone!
