First day home after front leg amputation ... :(

My dog bailey is 85 lb lab/american bulldog mix, and while he seemed to get around okay-ish when we first got home, he has fallen so many times that he now wont even try at all, and he hasn't gone to the bathroom since he's been home.  He finally tried to get up and eat and fell over almost immediately ... 🙁  i tried to use the cut open canvas grocery bag with handles as a harness, but he's very sensitive about his back legs and growls and rolls over on his back any time I try.  I dont want him to keep falling over and hurting himself, and i need him to walk and go potty.  If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it.

Thanks for joining, your future posts will not require moderation.

Some members wait days for their dogs to do their doody. How long has he Bailey been home? What he needs most right after surgery is lots of rest. As Jerry's vet told us, when he needs to go, he'll go. Please keep us posted.

Thank you for your reply.  He's been home for about 10 hours now and hasn't been resting much, but has definitely been wanting to eat, which is I guess a good sign, especially because he's being pretty bossy about it!  I'll take your and Jerry's vet's advice and will keep my fingers crossed that when he needs to go, he'll get up and go! 🙂  This is all so new (and sudden) to me, I'm so glad I found this site!

There will definitely be some ups and downs over the next few weeks. Unfortunately, the downs can really be frustrating and heart wrenching.  Sadie did great for a couple of days, then had a really rough 2 weeks. She seemed so lost and unhappy. Once she got off of the pain medication she seemed a lot better. Did Baily stay at the vet for a day or 2 or did he come right home? Sadie stayed at the vet because she required a lot of pain medication. Everything will work out, it's just a matter of time, and the time will seem to drag (it did for me anyway) Good luck and keep us posted.

Lisa

Sadie is my 9yr old Rott/Shepherd mix. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right scapula 1/28/10. Our brave girl had her amputation 2/13/10 and her last chemotherapy on 6/6/10. Unfortunately, a tumor appeared in her back right leg and on 10/7/2010 Sadie's earthly journey came to an end.  On 10/24/2010 we adopted Ranger, a handsome Rott/Lab mix tripawd (got hit by a car) I think Sadie sent him to us.

the first two weeks can be hell weeks!!!  the pain meds really mess with a pup's head - gayle was very loopy on tramadol and it made her pant like crazy.  gayle is a right front amp, and we did have some luck with the grocery bag - although we lined it with some really fluffy towel to make it soft.  you might try some ice on the incision if there seems to be pain...  it can take a day or two for peeing and pooping (even more in some cases) and they will let you know when they have to go.  if you have any doubt about anything, call your vet, they are your best resource and know your dog specifically. good luck and let us know how things progress.

charon & gayle

Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included).  She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.

Hi Bailey and pack,

Welcome to Tripawds.  First day home- unfortunately Bailey sounds about normal.  If he is only a day or two post amp he probably has lots of anesthetic drugs in his system which can make him loopy and unsteady- then there are pain meds on top of it.  And he has to learn his new body.

If he insists on eating standing up you might raise his food dish so he doesn't have to balance and lean down.  Some new tripawds eat and drink lying down.

Don't get discouraged, or think you did the wrong thing by amputating.  These first couple weeks are full of ups and downs.

Maggie peed the first day home, but did not poop until about day 6.  Pain meds can be constipating.

Tell us more about Bailey- did he lose his leg to cancer?

Good luck!  Lots of experience here to draw on- and lots of shoulders to cry on when things get tough.

He was probably getting around well when he first got home because he was still on the Morophine. The restlessness is usually due to the Tramadol and will lessen over time. My dog didn't pee for 2 days so I understand your concern. My dog had a front leg amp so I put a t-shirt on her to keep her from getting to the stitches then I was able to use the t-shirt to help hoist and support her body.

I don't really have anything to add to what other's have said, but wanted to welcome you and Bailey (our last dog was Bailey so we love that name!). This is the site no one wants to join but everyone is glad they did.

These 2 weeks will be tough - and seem longer than a regular two weeks because of the limited supply of sleep. Hang in there. Remember we're here for questions and support and venting.

Hope Bailey starts to feel a little better soon,
Jackie, Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Welcome Bailey and Family!

I don't have anything to add either.  If he seems in pain, you may want to try an ice pack on the area.  Leave it for 10 minutes.  It will numb the pain some.

What happened to Bailey?  Does he have cancer?

Sending you lots of healing wishes!

Hi,

Welcome!  All I can add is we had the same issue with our Fergus falling the first days and not wanting to go potty.  We found a beach towel sling was the easiest to use on him.  Just a warning, Fergus peed twice while he was in a deep sleep in the first day or 2.  He didn't even wake up afterward!  He did not have his first poop for a week.  I was concerned he wasn't sure how to position himself for success.  Eventually it came and it was all good.

Good luck, things will get better!

Welcome to Tripawds! Bailey will be his old self in no time! When he tries to walk, is he on a carpet/rug or is it a slick surface? If is is slick, you may want to put down some runners for him. Tripawds also sells Ruff Wear Skyliner Bark’n Boots, and info can be found by clicking on the store link.

Please keep us posted, and make sure you get lots of rest too! You will need it, as the first 2 weeks are the worst!

Sending you many golden hugs,

Cathy

Hi all, thanks so much for your replies.  My poor "monkey" was whining all through the night and wouldn't even try to get up this morning, but he finally did get up to eat.  I was beginning to wonder if i made the right decision, but seeing him finally get up (even if it was for only a few minutes) makes me feel better.

To answer some questions, I took Bailey in a few months ago for what I thought might have been a sprain to his right front leg which I figured was probably from a year of barreling down some pretty steep stairs at my apartment.  Xrays initially showed arthritis as the culprit, but when shots and deramaxx didn't seem to be making a difference and his elbow really started to swell, we took more xrays.  I didn't want to put him through a bone biopsy (and would have opted against chemo/radiation for him) so I tried antibiotics hoping it was a bone infection.  That didn't do anything, his pain had become obviously unbearable and he was dragging the leg around, and more xrays showed the bone was getting worse but no sign of tumors having spread to his chest, so I opted for amputation.  They'll do a biopsy on the leg, so I'll find out what it was we were dealing with.

I could definitely use any tips on front leg amputation, especially with big dogs.  Since he's so big and has such a broad chest, it seems to be much harder than if it had been a back leg.

Unfortunately for him, he'd had 3 knee surgeries on his back legs (2 patellar luxations on left and a TPLO on right) so he didn't have an easy time getting up with all 4 legs.  I was concerned his remaining front leg wouldn't be able to handle not only his weight and broad chest, but whatever else his back legs couldn't handle. Fortunately, my apartment is carpeted so when he falls he's not falling on a totally hard surface, but unfortunately, he rolls over whenever I try to help him up and he's not taking to any sort of sling (tried the canvas grocery bag slit down the sides) so I can't provide much support other than letting him lean against me once he finally does decided to stand. I do keep a tshirt on him which when he's not trying to chew the tshirt off, does seem to keep him from licking the stitches and keeps it clean when he falls over ... 🙁  He does seem to have traction issues, especially with his weak back legs and would love to put the Bark n Boots on him but I'm sure he'd chew them off in no time (he prefers to be naked 🙂

I'm not sure how much to spoil him now and how much tough love to give him?!?  He was barking at me to bring his food to him this morning, and I opted not to but brought it close enough to him so that he'd only have to take a few steps to get it   I live in an upstairs apartment, and was hoping he'd just potty on some sod I put outside my door, but he refused and kept whining to go downstairs to the yard.  I finally gave in, and we hobbled one step at a time downstairs where he immediately peed and pooped 3 times, but it was pretty dramatic trying to get him back upstairs. This morning, he stood up at the gate and wouldn't sit down, so I let him go downstairs and he seems to get around better when he can pick up speed than he does when he's up here, and he just lies down when he needs to rest, ... so maybe this will work out okay ...   🙂

Thanks again to all of you, I'm single and live alone and only weigh about 30 lbs more than he does, so this whole process has been pretty exhausting, but I'm thankful to have all of you to help me through this!

Hi Bailey and Mom,

I would recommend spoiling him!!  When my guy came home, I put the food and water on the floor right next to him for the first few days.  He will have more than enough time to get used to standing up to get his food.  I am amazed you were able to do the steps.  We are 6 weeks in and still using a ramp for the 4 steps off the back deck.  Our steps are icy after this weekends freak snow storm, so they are dangerous right now.

The whining is normal.  From what I have been told, dogs do not like the feeling of being drugged.  Not sure what pain meds he is on, but as you cut back on the dosage, he will get better.  The first 2 weeks are the worst and you will question if you made the right decision.  Have faith in yourself knowing you made the best choice for Bailey.

Good luck it sounds like he is doing great,

Tara & Fergus

Thanks Tara!

I have to admit I feel a bit like a negligent mom for letting him do the stairs, but he is so stubborn and it seemed to upset him more that he couldn't go downstairs than it did to leave his food a few feet away.  we went down one step at a time and I helped him, but getting back up definitely remains the tricky part. That being said, when I went downstairs to help him get back up the stairs, he turns around and walks away, but when I came back up here to get my coffee, I turned around and he had found a way to make it up the stairs without me!  Typical boy and typical bulldog, I guess!   I'll let him go one more time tonight for potty break but the rest of the day will be spent upstairs resting!
